Brad Arthur on Fergie McCormack can do to return to Leeds line-up

BRAD ARTHUR knows that youngster Fergie McCormack has ‘work to do’ before he becomes Leeds Rhinos’ number one.

However, in the absence of first choice fullback Lachie Miller, McCormack came in for rave reviews, with the 20-year-old often showing a maturity beyond his years.

And Arthur – though admitting McCormack has a long way to go – praised him for his contribution in Miller’s absence.

“I don’t want to be disrespectful but he’s got work to do before he comes number one,” Arthur said.

“Lachie has had a sensational season so far and it has been unfortunate that he’s missed out.

“He’s in our best team every day of the week but we’re not going to undersell what Fergie has done for us.

“He did great for us. It’s all about the young person developing, he got taught some good lessons and has learnt plenty from his three games.”

So how can McCormack force himself back into the reckoning?

“Number one, his form, but I think everyone that has been involved in our team this year hasn’t showed any signs of taking their position for granted because they know changes will be made if they don’t.

“That’s the level of competition for spots. And injuries could play a role in him coming back. I would be more than happy to give Fergie some time in the halves if something happened there.

“He understands his position in the team and the club and all the young guys understand that they are part of a good squad.

“Their biggest contribution for us is how they train for us and get us ready for game day.”
