Broken hand fear for Paul McShane after York Knights’ ‘valuable lesson’

YORK KNIGHTS coach Mark Applegarth revealed that hooker Paul McShane has a suspected broken hand.

McShane – who contributed to York’s opening try in their 23-22 loss at Wigan Warriors – was withdrawn in the second half.

The loss of the former Man of Steel in the second period hurt the Knights as Wigan came from behind to edge his team out.

“We are a bit worried he has got a fractured hand,” said Applegarth.

“It has swollen up a bit. He couldn’t quite grip the ball and pass it, so naturally in the position he plays, we did not want to risk it.

“We will get him X-rayed. Hopefully, we will get some good news on that. It is probably 50/50 whether that is a fracture or not.”

Speaking about the game, Applegarth admitted he was proud of the effort his team put in.

He added: “In the second half Wigan smothered us and dominated possession and territory which ultimately took its toll.

“It was a valuable lesson for us in terms of us missing two one-on-one tackles and not sticking to our system for a try. In the end, that is 18 points.

“I’ll never question my team’s spirit, effort and application. We are just going to make sure we get them smarts along the way.

“Yes, it is a tough loss, but it’s also a valuable learning opportunity.”
