NEWCASTLE THUNDER flyer Andy Djeukessi has a bright future according to Mark Applegarth, who handed the winger his York debut against St Helens recently.
The latest in a string of Thunder players to feature for their partner club the Knights in Super League, the 23-year-old, who has 20 tries for the north-east side, had an eventful evening at the LNER Stadium.
The former Castleford player (his sole Tigers outing was also against Saints, last season) was caught out by a swirling kick which bounced off a crossbar and led to a try in the closing stages of York’s 34-32 win.
But Applegarth stressed such incidents are the best way for young players to learn and said: “I thought Andy was solid.
“He’ll be beating himself up over that try at the end, but you’ve got to detach yourself from those individual moments and look at what you’ve done well.
“Andy has been in great form for Newcastle. It’s an absolute pleasure when we have him around the training ground. He’s got so much potential and his ceiling cap is massive.
“There’s only one way that youngsters learn, they’ve got to go through these periods when things don’t go their way as well as when they do.
“Overall, I was really happy with Andy, and there’ll be plenty more rugby for him.”
