Brown to Cronulla cools as Sharks circle Brisbane’s Barba

Kevin Brown’s rumoured move to the NRL with Cronulla took another step back today after reports emerged linking the Sharks with Brisbane utility Ben Barba.

Cronulla are in the market for a half-back to replace disgraced Todd Carney and new Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has reportedly given the green light for rival clubs to negotiate with several of his side’s best players.

Barba, 25, is said to be one of them despite joining the Queensland club last year and notching eight tries in 25 appearances this campaign.

Former Brisbane skipper Sam Thaiday believes Bennett is “really trying to stamp his authority.”

“He has to have a squad which he can really work with in the future,” he said.

“It’s a tough old sport that we play and you can be on the wrong end of the stick sometimes. I hope they can still be a part of the Broncos, but if the boys leave it’s going to be tough for them and I’d wish them all the best.”
