Dewsbury Rams look to learn lessons ahead of Widnes Vikings repeat

DEWSBURY RAMS have the chance to bounce back after a three-match Championship losing sequence when they renew acquaintances with Widnes Vikings in the 1895 Cup on Sunday.

The ninth-placed West Yorkshire side have managed four wins in the merged second tier, and none of their five defeats have been by wide margins.

After going down 18-16 to Sheffield at their FLAIR Stadium base, 21-20 in their Heavy Woollen derby at Batley, and 20-10 at home to Widnes, they host the Vikings again in round one of the 1895 Cup.

“We are a mainly young squad, and we are learning a lot of lessons,”  head coach Paul March explained.

“The league game with Widnes was very much one of two halves, and I questioned the lads at the end of the first (when the Rams were 20-0 down) because I felt that rather than doing what the team needed, they had been thinking and playing as individuals.

“I thought the positive was that in the second half, we came out and fixed that up, and built our way back into the game, although our discipline needed to be better and we needed to be a bit smarter.

“At 20-0 down it was always going to be a big ask, and it was unfortunate that we conceded a try right at the end of the first half, because had it been 14-10, Widnes would have been under pressure and we might have nicked it.”
