SATURDAY’S Armed Forces event surrounding Newcastle Thunder’s Championship fixture with Whitehaven has been facilitated by Thunder’s chief executive Richie Metcalfe, who is himself a former Royal Navy player.
Metcalfe said: “We are acutely aware that Armed Forces Day is a busy time for our services, and we are incredibly honoured that they have chosen to support us to help grow Rugby League in the North-East.
“This day is about showcasing our deep appreciation for the Armed Forces, providing a prime engagement opportunity for the local Armed Forces units and blue light services, while also exposing new fans to our great sport.”
Newcastle Thunder will warm up in special limited-edition shirts supporting the Royal British Legion.
The occasion will, it is hoped, encourage recruitment for not only the Army, RAF, Royal Marines and Royal Navy but for blue light services such as, locally, Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service. With that in mind, an Armed Forces village will host displays and activities, including an assault course.
In addition, the Band of the Royal Fusiliers will play.
Meanwhile, on the same day, the Army A side will play the Royal Marines at Crosfields, Warrington, for the Sephton Trophy, with an 11am start.
And on Wednesday (June 24), Doncaster Toll Bar entertain the RAF, with a kick-off time of 6.30pm shown by the GameDay agency.
