  1. I think he moved to Australia a few years ago.
  2. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/picture/2016/jun/30/david-squires-on-australian-rugby-leagues-super-league-war https://www.theguardian.com/sport/picture/2016/may/12/david-squires-on-the-kangaroos-first-tour-to-great-britain-in-1908 (In fairness, his job title is something like "football cartoonist")
  3. ? I realise you're carrying a bit more mass around than I am, but running a marathon only comes in at around 3300 kcal for me. So I assume you've been doing something to get Mr. Fitbit excited even if he hasn't got his numbers exactly right?
  4. Nations League fever gripping the country I see. England in the semi-final tomorrow.
  5. Generally reckoned to be round about 2% per 3 pounds lost (assuming no muscle lost) so two stone is getting on for a 20% improvement in race times. I've always found training for a marathon brings down times across the board even without losing any weight.
  6. Last year against Roma in the QF - won 4-1 at home, lost 3-0 in Rome and went out on away goals.
  7. Chance of getting into London through the lottery is about 1 in 10 now. Brighton sells out pretty quickly IIRC. I did Boston (Lincs) at the start of April. £30 entry, including a very nice t-shirt. Flat, extremely well-organised and supported. You can enter within a few days of the race - none of this lottery nonsense. Admittedly, it's 26 miles round the turnip fields of England's dullest county and there's a wind off the north sea throughout. I did Barcelona marathon a few years back (also in April) having worked out that it was cheaper and nicer than doing Manchester marathon the same day.
  8. Any other time of the year, tens of thousands of British people chasing half a dozen Kenyans through the streets of London would be frowned upon.
  9. Probably told this story on here before. I was travelling in Indonesia 25+ years ago. The railway line got washed away by a landslide and I ended up having to kill most of a day at a bus station. This was a time and place where white people were still pretty unusual and kids would be touching my hand to make sure I was real. Anyway, got talking to some local youths. Their English was a few words, my bahasa indonesia also a few words. After a while, we established that I was from England. Turns out the only famous "Englishman" they knew was Eric Cantona.
  10. The Gaumont-Pathe archives have a lot of news reel clips of French RL from the 1940s and 1950s, including internationals, world cup games and league finals (e.g Paris Celtic vs Lyon, Roanne winning at the Parc des Princes). "Great Britain" were billed as "Empire Brittanique" when they played in France at that time, rather than GB or England, which may explain the different colours.
  11. A pet deer too. I've spent the last couple of years trying to stop the things getting into my garden - they seem to have an unerring eye for what's a weed and what isn't. In a year living in Australia, I did not see any snakes or scary spiders. I did see some crocs in the Northern Territory and thousands of cane toads going under the wheels of my car in North Queensland.
  12. Doesn't give a date, but google suggests 1920s. I just liked the "no sheep" and "some sheep" labels.
  13. An old map of sheep in Australia http://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-234331946/view
  14. There's a chap who sometimes runs Cambridge parkrun in tweeds. Sub-20 minutes too. He does have running shoes rather than brogues though. Boston (UK) Marathon for me on Sunday. 26 miles around the turnip fields of Britain's dullest county.
  15. Now that is one book that you have to read right to the end before judging ?
  16. Second place at parkrun this morning. I guess all the fast people have a race tomorrow or something, but still, very happy with that.
  17. Why are you on a treadmill rather than outside running in that?
  18. I did the Oxfam trailwalker a few years ago - 62 miles (100km) over the South Downs Way. Last 20 miles were spent promising myself I would never do it again.
  19. First ever top 10 finish at a parkrun for me (after more than 250 parkruns...) Helped that I went to a smaller event than normal.
  20. Just for bob8 - study finds that men who can do 40 push-ups have a 96% lower chance of a cardiac event than those who can do fewer than 10. https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2019/02/pushup-capacity-may-be-inexpensive-way-to-assess-cardiovascular-disease-risk/
  21. My rule for running is if both legs hurt, it's tiredness. If one leg hurts, it's an injury.
  22. I've found those to work a treat - and there's been several scientific studies backing it up too. Best to nip it in the bud before it turns into an injury. The achilles tendon is amazingly slow to heal if it does get a tear or something.
  23. 20 mile run this morning, which led to a post-lunch nap this afternoon and not much else getting done all day and I won't be running in France this weekend.
  24. No point taking chances with things that might be an injury - rest until it doesn't hurt. My wife did parkrun in a bit under 34 minutes today. She hadn't run more than 3k in quite a few months, so was pretty pleased with that time.
  25. Maybe you know otherwise, but I thought it was just that the original nitrate films just don't last very long and although the library of congress got some of the originals, they need fairly expensive & time consuming restoration work to be watchable again.
