hehe I was aware, but did he not make the decision to move to automatic promotion, from the 8s format we had (via a rather contrived vote)?

Which in turn made the old funding allocations redundant.

I'm not convinced Rimmer is anything other than Elstone's puppet. Elstone holds the purse strings, he says jump, Rimmer says how high.

No, the changes were made by the RFL in consultation with all member clubs. The price that SL paid for the changes was automatic P&R between the Championship and SL, which wasn't in place before.

Elstone doesn't call the tune, the SL Chairmen who appointed him do. He is the Chief Executive but they are the shareholders so his job is to deliver the policies determined by them.

The TV agreement is between Sky and the RFL so, in practice, the RFL hold the purse strings. The SL Chairmen hold the majority of voting power within the RFL, however so, in a roundabout way, you might be correct.

Sport, amongst other things, is a dream-world offering escape from harsh reality and the disturbing prospect of change.

What an absolute load of rubbish.  Whoever came up with the idea that likes on face book and the suchlike would be part of the assessment for the award of central funding needs their head examining.  And as for the people who went along with it and agreed to it - presumably the club chairmen - well they need a period in the asylum.

If it were as simplistic as that Fred then you are correct, it would be crazy; reality is a little more complex. The majority of the central funding is still determined by your league position. A small proportion (I'm not sure how small) is determined by an "added-value" calculation, one part of which is social interaction of which a part is the activities between clubs and "stakeholders" utilising such as social media.

It all sounds a bit vague, and I'm sure that it still is but apparently this is driven by a desire amongst the clubs for there to be a more nuanced system of distribution that doesn't simply rely upon league positions. Before you start to fume about it though do consider that all such central distributions might disappear in a puff of smoke in two years time.

Surely if you inflate attendances you would have to show increased gate receipts in your accounts and pay tax on thoae gate recipts this negating the increase in funding?

In theory you could claim an attendance of 10000 for every game but all that matters for the taxman are the numbers counted by your (paying in) turnstiles, be they mechanical or electronic. Of course he may eventually (well probably fairly quickly) question your numbers should you 'declare' 10000 but only register 1000 actually entering the ground. Also remember attendance figures are not the actual number in attendance as season ticket holders are counted whether they turn up or not.
