DEWSBURY RAMS fans have been hailed for their continued support of the club’s long-running Squadbuilder fund.
Paul March’s side picked up plaudits after coming out on top in a see-saw showdown at Newcastle.
That made it three wins from three in the Championship – a run which was ended by the 16-14 home defeat against Goole on Saturday.
Experienced former York, Hunslet and Keighley coach March has carefully constructed his squad on a tight budget as stalwart Chairman Mark Sawyer works to keep the Rams on an even keel financially.
March, 46, has put his extensive knowledge of the amateur scene to good use – ex-Hunslet ARLFC hooker Jack McShane crossed twice against Newcastle – and also recruited players who have been at Super League clubs but struggled to make a breakthrough.
Central to his side are centre Bailey O’Connor, brought in from stricken Featherstone in January, and second rower Brad Graham, who arrived from Halifax in November.
Dewsbury’s Squadbuilder, which was set up in 2003 and operates through monthly subscriptions, contributed to both deals.
A Dewsbury spokesperson said: “Squadbuilder remains one of the most important ways fans can directly strengthen the squad, and the club thank everyone who continues to support.”
March said: “Mark (Sawyer) has a good business model here, and while we might not be able to give players the most financially, we offer the flexibility some other clubs might not and to be in an environment we try to make as enjoyable as we can.
“We also work hard to develop players and help them reach their potential, and if that means them moving on at some point, we are comfortable with that and welcome it.”
