Kirke hands Brian Smith a major boost for weekend

Wakefield prop Ian Kirke has been named in Brian Smith’s first 19-man squad in charge of the club, after being out for six weeks with a broken thumb.

Kirke has endured a torrid time since joining the Wildcats from Leeds in the off-season, but he returns for the match against Salford along with Max Jowitt.

Coach Smith said “I am pleased to welcome Ian Kirke back into the squad. I have had a positive reaction from the players this week in training, and I am now hoping that they transfer this into the game on Sunday.”

However, Richard Owen and Craig Hall will miss the game against Salford after picking up knocks last weekend. They join Reece Lyne, Ali Lauitiiti, Scott Anderson and Matty Ashurst on the side-lines.

Wakefield 19-man squad: Chris Annakin, Joe Arundel, Pita Godinet, Stuart Howarth, Tom Johnstone, Max Jowitt, Ben Kavanagh, Ian Kirke, Danny Kirmond, Paul McShane, Jacob Miller, Jon Molloy, Chris Riley, Matt Ryan, Nick Scruton, Mickael Simon, Dan Smith, Tim Smith, Danny Washbrook.
