MATT PEET has revealed that Wigan Warriors forward Sam Walters has been ‘working’ on his tackle technique following his lengthy ban.
Walters received a seven-match ban following his late red card late in Wigan’s Challenge Cup final win over Hull KR in late May.
In doing so, the Warriors forward became the first man since 1993 to be dismissed at Wembley after his dangerous tackle on Robins hooker Bill Leyland.
Walters’ suspension came less than two months after he was handed a three-match ban and 18 penalty points for a headbutting offence during Wigan’s quarter-final win over Wakefield Trinity.
But Peet has backed the former Leeds Rhinos man to play the game ‘in the right manner’ following his suspension.
“I think every case is a bit different but I think it’s important that you address whether it is a technique thing or an emotional control/decision-making thing,” Peet said.
“Every case is different but you want the best players on the field and playing it in the right manner where it is safe for them and their opponents.
“Whatever it takes to eradicate the flashpoints and those sorts of moments but you’ve got to understand that these players are playing an intense game.
“Lads are in 40/50 contacts with and without the ball so it can be a split-second mistake or a poor judgement made and they’ve got to pay the price.
“You can’t just expect things to go away without working on them.”
