WIGAN WARRIORS head coach Matt Peet believes Sam Walters is “unfortunate” to have received another suspension.
When Walters completes his two-match ban, to be served in games at Bradford Bulls on Saturday and at home to Wakefield Trinity next Friday, August 21, he will have missed twelve games due to three separate offences this season.
His latest indiscretion came as a result of a Grade B Other Contrary Behaviour charge from Wigan’s big win over Toulouse Olympique last week.
Because of his previous record, having received a three-game ban for headbutting in the Challenge Cup quarter-final over Wakefield and then seven matches for the dangerous tackle which saw him dismissed in Wigan’s Wembley win against Hull KR, Walters’ disciplinary points total takes him up to a two-match suspension.
Peet said: “I believe he’s been unfortunate. I don’t think there was a lot he got wrong.
“It’s not one of those where I’m telling him he needs to learn because it’s a split-second thing.
“We’ve got to turn it into a blessing for Sam. He will be fresh at the back end of the year and he’s fit as a fiddle because he hasn’t missed games through injury.”
