Matt Peet responds to Sam Walters and Harry Smith bans after Challenge Cup Final

MATT PEET says the seven-match ban handed out to Wigan Warriors star Sam Walters in the aftermath of the Challenge Cup Final was fair.

Walters was slapped with a Grade F Dangerous Throw/Lift charge, thus incurring a seven-match ban, following his dismissal for a challenge on Hull KR’s Bill Leyland.

Meanwhile Harry Smith was given a one-match suspension after being charged with Grade B Head Contact.

“I have spoke to the pair of them and they were both very different scenarios,” Peet said.

“Sam regrets that tackle. It didn’t look good and I’m just glad Bill got up the way he did and I’m glad he is ok.

“It all went wrong and we’ve got to accept that ban. It was more than fair.

“Harry’s is a little bit different, he’s being punished for what happened at Wakefield (a previous charge which came with 18 penalty points) which is unfortunate but we move on.”

With Bevan French unavailable, a new player will need to move into the halves on Saturday when Wigan face Catalans Dragons in Paris.

Peet said: “We’ve got options in the halves. We’ve played George (Marsden) there in the past and Adam (Keighran) has played in the halves.”
