Newcastle Thunder sign York Knights forward as clubs boost partnership

NEWCASTLE THUNDER have agreed a strengthened partnership with York Knights ahead of next season – and signed Australia-born Welsh international Bailey Antrobus from the Super League newcomers.

Antrobus, a 25-year-old back-rower, played 40 times across four seasons with York, scoring seven tries.

He appeared once on dual-registration for Newcastle last season and is their first confirmed squad member for 2026.

Graham Steadman, who replaced Knights-bound Chris Thorman as Newcastle head coach in June, said of Antrobus: “His versatility across the forward pack and his commitment in defence make him one of the most reliable assets in a team.

“With a full pre-season ahead and a refreshed squad around him, I expect he will be central to the team’s plans as we look to climb the ladder in the newly reformed Championship in 2026.”

The two clubs are growing increasingly close, with the pair part of a development pathway alongside NRL giants Penrith Panthers.

Next season Newcastle are expected to make use of the loan system to field players from York on a regular basis.

The Knights also hope to lead the way in capturing top talent developed in the north east in future.

Thunder CEO Richie Metcalfe said: “This partnership gives our players a direct opportunity to reach Super League. If you perform at Newcastle, there is now a clear, professional, and direct route to the top.

“This partnership removes obstacles other pathways have allowing players deserving of top-tier selection real selection consideration.”

York chairman Clint Goodchild added: “We’ve created a professional pathway that opens real opportunities for players and lifts standards.

“Within this ecosystem there is real opportunity for all players to compete week in, week out and continue in their development.”
