OLDHAM have agreed a contract extension to 2028 with popular prop Owen Farnworth, with chairman Bill Quinn saying it’s the first in a series of moves to create squad stability moving forward.
The announcement follows the loaning out of three players for the remainder of this season amid a drive to cut costs after Quinn said the Championship club have been spending “hundreds of thousands of pounds more” than they should have.
Prop Jack Ormondroyd has stepped up to Super League with Bradford while secondrows Emmanuel Waine and Sam Littler have switched to second-tier rivals Keighley.
Earlier this month, winger Matty Russell joined top-flight Catalans Dragons for an undisclosed fee.
Quinn has told supporters there are unlikely to be any other outgoing long-term loans, and that a series of announcements regarding the squad for next year and beyond are in the pipeline.
Farnworth, 27, signed from Widnes in 2024, and said: “I feel like we are moving in the right direction.
“We have still got a really good team and we are still trying to win this league. We need to keep cracking on, but I think we will be up there at the end of the season.”
Oldham, currently in dispute with Oldham Athletic Football Club over their use of Boundary Park, have confirmed Friday’s home derby against Rochdale will be at Bower Fold, Stalybridge, with a 3.45pm kick-off.
That’s to allow supporters to also take in the Oldham ARL’s Standard Cup final between Waterhead and Saddleworth earlier in the day.
