HOLLINWOOD RLFC, together with the Oldham and District league and the wider amateur Rugby League community, are in mourning for Fred Halliwell.
The long-serving grassroots stalwart passed away on Sunday, May 24, at the age of 86, surrounded by members of his family, including his wife Anita. He had been suffering from Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease.
Granddaughter Logan said: “He developed an infection and despite his best efforts and because of the complexity, he was unable to fight it.
“My grandad made a great impact on the amateur game and knew a lot of people. A truly one-of-a-kind man, he was loved by so many and a legend to all who knew him.
“He is now reunited with his beloved daughter, who he missed so dearly.”
Fred’s daughter Janet predeceased him, on October 21, 2005. He leaves Anita, granddaughters Lauren, Rebbekka, Jordanne and Logan, and great-grandchildren Riley, Ollie, Elsie, Teddy and Bodhi.
Funeral details have yet to be confirmed.
