Oldham taking no chances as Wigan Warriors forward becomes latest loan addition

OLDHAM have borrowed a second forward to help see them through to the end of the season in the shape of Wigan Warriors prospect Lukas Mason.

The 20-year-old secondrow’s arrival follows that of fellow loanee pack player Noah High from Wakefield Trinity.

Mason, whose father Keith played for Wakefield, Melbourne Storm, St Helens, Castleford Tigers, Huddersfield Giants and Wales, has come through Wigan’s renowned development system and played once for Oldham on dual registration last season.

Alongside three appearances for the Warriors, he has also previously been farmed out to London Broncos, Rochdale Hornets, Salford and Halifax Panthers.

Mason will not feature for Oldham when they host Salford in their penultimate regular-season game on Sunday, but coach Alan Kilshaw, who is plotting a play-off challenge, explained: “It is important that we had enough depth to get us through until the end of the year – and we’ve got that now.

“With the players that we have brought in and the ones we have on loan, we are in a good place.

“With (Leigh Leopards loanee) Lazarus Vaalepu going, we have brought in Noah and Lukas. We can do some rotation over the next couple of weeks.

“We have played a lot of matches. It has been nine months of relentless games through all different weathers.”

Oldham’s final Championship match ahead of the play-offs is at Rochdale Hornets on Sunday, August 30.
