Proving critics wrong added motivation for Toulouse Olympique

MATHIEU JUSSAUME believes Toulouse coach Sylvain Houles is “one of the best” after the French side defied all the odds to finish eighth in Super League.

Written off by all and sundry ahead of the campaign following their elevation to the top flight courtesy of an independent panel, Olympique shocked a number of clubs along the way, earning impressive wins over Wakefield and Hull KR.

Eleven of their players have earned call-ups to the France squad ahead of the World Cup, while second rower Jussaume was rewarded for his great club form with a Super League Dream Team appearance.

Toulouse have proved the doubters wrong, and Jussaume, 27, admits that was part of the motivation.

“I think because everyone thought we wouldn’t do well, we wanted to prove and to show them that we’re not the last team,” he said.

“We can be a very good side and we play good footy. I think people have enjoyed watching us and when we do that, we are even happier.

“I think I’ve played my best Rugby League this year and I mean, it’s Super League. Since the beginning of the year I know that in every game, I’ve played better and better.”

Jussaume believes the squad’s close-knit nature and Houles’ leadership are key reasons behind their progress.

“Our travels are long but the boys make it worth it. We’re very tight,” he added.

“And I think Sylvain is one of the best. He’s been here maybe 13 years now.

“I have played under only this coach and I like to work with him. I like the way he works and he loves us. That’s why we do what we do.

“It’s been crazy. We have a very big group, who are all friends, and to play every week against the best players in the world with my friends is so cool.”
