Ex-St Helens winger Regan Grace turned down Super League interest for new union deal

WELSH dual-code winger Regan Grace has signed a short-term deal with English Prem side Sale Sharks until February following a successful trial.

Grace, without a club since leaving fellow union outfit Cardiff at the end of last season, has been training with Sale since the summer.

The 28-year-old left St Helens at the end of the 2022 season, following three Super League Grand Final successes, for rugby union after signing a deal with French side Racing 92.

But Grace ruptured his Achilles for Saints in July of his final year, then suffered a repeat of the injury in 2023.

After Racing released him from his contract, Grace joined Bath to continue his rehab and was awarded a contract in February 2024. Just two games later, Grace moved to Cardiff on a short-term deal.

Grace started for Sale in their 20-0 defeat to Bath in the Premiership Rugby Cup last Saturday and now the flying winger has reflected on his recent past as well as revealing Super League offers.

“The last few years haven’t been an easy ride for me and I’ve had plenty of setbacks but I still love playing rugby,” Grace said.

“I had opportunities to go back into rugby league but I do feel like I haven’t shown what I can do in rugby union so I trained by myself and kept myself fit, waiting for a chance with a club.

“WillGriff John (a Sharks forward and former Racing team-mate) introduced me to Sale and it’s been brilliant to have a pre-season to learn the culture and get to know the lads.

“I’ve worked really hard and now I feel fit, strong and confident and I’m looking forward to playing over the next few months because I feel I’ve still got a lot to give.”
