SAM BURGESS says no decision will be made over his future in the coming months as he prepares for a crunch season with Warrington Wolves.
His contract expires at the end of this year, his third as Wire head coach having led the club to two Challenge Cup finals but overseen a disappointing eighth-place Super League finish in 2025.
Uncertainty surrounds Warrington at present, with captain George Williams set to leave after this season for the Dolphins and a further eleven first-team players off-contract.
Burgess has been consistently linked with a return to Australia, where he enjoyed a highly successful playing career, including interviewing for the Perth Bears coaching role last year.
He is also considered to be a contender for the vacant England head coach role, with his former South Sydney Rabbitohs and international coach Wayne Bennett suggesting he should take charge alongside James Graham.
“I’m enjoying being in this position,” said Burgess of being in the final year of his club contract.
“Whatever happens happens over the next few months. Right now I’ve got my head down and I’m working away. I won’t make any decisions over the next six months.”
On England, a position which may revert to being part-time, he added: “I’ve not really thought about it – I’ve got my mind focused pretty hard on what we’re doing here.
“It’s not crossed my mind really. I don’t think anyone knows what’s happening.”
Williams is set for his sixth and final season at Warrington, with the England skipper yet to lift silverware at the club.
“George is a very competitive bloke and he’ll be looking to give it his best shot,” said Burgess.
“He always gives 110 percent – his challenge is to lead the group and get the guys around him up to that level consistently, and that will give us a good shot.”
While there is great uncertainty around the club beyond this season, Burgess believes the year itself will be a more settled one as the Wolves seek to transform their fortunes after bringing in six new players.
“We’re happy with the squad we have,” said the coach.
“We had a lot of disruption in the squad throughout last year with people coming and going, but I’d like to think this year we’ll be a lot more settled.
“We’re comfortable with the group of players we have now, they will carry us through the year. There are young guys there who got some great experience out of last year.
“We’re confident in the group we’ve got and we’ve built some trust over pre-season.”
