SAM BURGESS expressed his pride after seeing Warrington Wolves consolidate third place – and narrow the gap to leaders Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors to two points – with a 34-28 victory at Hull KR.
“I am happy with the performance, and I am proud of the team,” said Burgess.
“We got our physicality and mentality right. Away to Hull KR is a tough game but we did it right.”
Key were halfbacks George Williams, in only his second match back from neck surgery, and teen Ewan Irwin.
“He certainly strengths our team and he has been awesome,” Burgess said of Williams.
On Irwin, he added: “He did everything right without being outstanding, but he showed he’s a tough kid to get through it.
“He even went to fullback when we lost Josh Thewlis and didn’t look out of place.”
Thewlis came off with a hamstring issue, while Warrington also lost forwards Toafofoa Sipley (ankle) and Jordan Crowther (head) during the game.
“We lost three players in a short space of time and with the short turnaround they won’t play at the weekend,” said Burgess, whose side host Huddersfield Giants on Sunday.
“We may need to submit our 21-man squad 24 hours later with dispensation from the RFL (as they did for the Hull KR game) to see who is available.”
On the travelling support, Burgess added: “There is a great connection between the fans and the players and I’ve said that all year.
“Especially on a Tuesday night, for them to spend their hard-earned money and come over is a credit to them.”
