ROYAL NAVY 46 SCOTLAND A 22
BARRY McGUFFOG, Crow Trees, Saturday
THE Navy, after being held to a 16-12 interval lead in a game which acted as a curtain-raiser to Newcastle Thunder’s Betfred Championship fixture with Whitehaven, cruised to an ultimately comfortable victory.
Scotland A had a dozen ‘domestic’ players and two (Cullen and Syme-Nicholson) from their junior pathways structure.
Scotland’s 19-man side also included four men (Tom Gray, Connor Terrill, Ben Morris and Mackenzie Cumming) from the student arena, together with Midlands Hurricanes’ Kieran Moran, who was a member of the Great Britain Teachers team who recently won the President’s Cup against England Universities and UK Armed Forces.
The Navy prevailed through a brace for Brodie Lee Butler, a try and seven goals to Ben Conner and touchdowns by Jonny Stoppard, Cai Ellis, Louis Fraser, James Teixeira and Pat Coy.
Moran, Jordan Duncan, Tom Murray and Roserutabua Tawanayavulala replied for the Scots, with George Shannon improving three efforts.
