GEORGE WILLIAMS will play against York Knights on Thursday night, Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess has confirmed.
Williams has not featured since suffering a serious neck injury during Warrington’s defeat to the Catalans Dragons back in April.
With the 31-year-old joining the NRL’s Dolphins at the end of the campaign, it was initially feared that Williams could have played his last game for the Wolves.
However, following successful surgery and a return to training, skipper Williams is in line to return 15 Super League rounds later.
And Burgess has revealed that the halfback is itching to play after such a long time out.
“George will play – he’s driven that as I think he’s fed up of training,” Burgess said.
“He’s healthy. He’s had every scan and check he could possibly have and he’s keen to play.
“Whether he plays the full game or not, I’m not sure yet but it will be good to see him back out there.
“We want George to go and have some fun and enjoy being back out there with his teammates, and we’re playing at home as well so it will be nice for him to come back here.
“It might take him a couple of weeks to get his rhythm and feel back, but it gives us enough time before the end of the year.”
Warrington are currently well placed to make the play-offs, sat in fourth position, six points ahead of seventh-placed St Helens with a game in hand.
Williams’ return is also good news for England, with new national-team coach Brian McDermott expressing his desire to keep Williams as captain for the autumn’s World Cup in Australia.
