“We don’t recruit back-ups” – Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet shoots down Abbas Miski claim following strong Super League showing

WIGAN WARRIORS have been renowned for their blockbusting, speedy wingers in recent years.

From Tom Davies and Joe Burgess to now Bevan French and Liam Marshall, the Warriors have been blessed with stars out wide.

Following the injury to fullback Jai Field, however, French has been moved to fullback by Wigan boss Matt Peet in 2023 as Lebanese international winger Abbas Miski gets the nod on the wing.

Miski, who was signed from Championship side London Broncos ahead of the 2022 Super League season, has excelled since being given his chance by Peet.

And it’s fair to say that Peet is impressed by the 27-year-old winger, too.

“I can’t fault him to be honest, day in day out and the way he handles himself with the group and the way he is playing,” Peet said.

“He works very hard on his game, I am made up for him.”

With Miski out of contract at the end of the 2023 Super League season, Peet was asked, because of the Lebanon man’s form, if he could be lured away to be a first-choice winger somewhere.

But, the Wigan boss shot down the claim that Miski is merely a back-up Warriors winger.

“He wasn’t brought in as a back-up winger, we don’t recruit back-ups. He missed out in the first-team because Liam (Marshall) and Bevan (French) were playing outstandingly well out there.”

“You hope your players are playing well enough to get the attention of other clubs. We have to manage our recruitment, too, just like any other club.”

Miski’s contract, however, does contain an option for 2024, with nine others at Wigan also coming off-contract at the end of 2023: Mike Cooper (option for 2024), Cade Cust (option for 2024), Kaide Ellis (option for 2024), Willie Isa, Patrick Mago (option for 2024), Brad Singleton, Ramon Silva (option for 2024), Morgan Smithies, Iain Thornley (option for 2024).
