WIGAN WARRIORS will be without Liam Farrell for a month as the back-rower’s recovery from a shoulder injury has hit a setback.
Farrell hasn’t played for the Warriors since the 20-16 win over Hull FC at the end of June, with Wigan boss Matt Peet originally giving his captain a four-week diagnosis.
But ahead of Friday’s derby with Leigh Leopards, Peet said: “Liam Farrell will be out for an extended period.
“We haven’t got the improvements that he needed around his shoulder so he will be out for at least another four weeks.”
Wigan go up against the Leopards in the so-called ‘Battle of the Borough’ – a fixture that has taken on considerable importance in recent years given Leigh’s rise to prominence under Adrian Lam, Peet’s predecessor as Warriors coach.
Peet has reflected upon Lam’s success as head coach and the importance of the fixture on Friday night.
“I think it’s one of the most exciting games of the year for us, particularly going to Leigh,” he said.
“It’s a great occasion. They generate one of the best atmospheres in Super League, which is a credit to the club.
“They are a fantastic team and are in great form. I think they’ve got some individuals in outstanding form like Umyla Hanley, Joe Ofahengaue and their halfbacks (Adam Cook and Lachlan Lam).
“It’s a credit to what Adrian has done there.”
