HULL KR head coach Willie Peters is adamant that Mikey Lewis has learnt his lesson from his four-match ban as the halfback prepares to return for the visit of Warrington Wolves on Tuesday night.
Lewis hasn’t played since the defeat to Warrington Wolves last month after incurring a four-match suspension for two indiscretions – a headbutt and late tackle.
But Peters says that the halfback has been able to “take a breath” in what has been a challenging period.
“Mikey has got a lot of learning out of the last four weeks,” Peters said.
“He knows he needs to stay calm and composed because he is an elite player when he does that.
“We’re better for having Mikey in our team but in the week-to-week cycle of rugby league, you can get caught up and you can’t take a breath.
“He’s now been able to take a breath for the wrong reasons but he can reflect over what he’s done over the course of the year.
“He knows he needs to play with composure, he has done that a lot of times for us.”
Whilst out of the team, Lewis has become more involved in training in recent weeks.
“He has been more vocal in meetings after initially sitting back and reflecting which I didn’t mind,” explained Peters.
“He couldn’t talk too much initially because he was out and couldn’t put his words into action.
“He supported his teammates but as we have progressed to him getting closer to playing he has become more vocal.
“He has got a lot of energy and he will bring that. What Mikey needs to do is channel that energy into the right parts of his game.”
