Workington Town look to maintain winning formula

WORKINGTON TOWN coach Jonty Gorley has asked for more of the same when his side returns to action against Sheffield on Sunday.

After a run of defeats to the Eagles, Dewsbury Rams, Barrow Raiders, Oldham and Salford stretching back to early May, Town finally returned to winning ways with a 40-14 victory over Hunslet at the end of June.

While he admits it was far from the perfect performance, Gorley did see many positives in that game to build on.

However, he has been left to wait almost three weeks to be able to do that after two fixture-free weekends for the Cumbrians.

“We’d had a few bad weeks leading into the Hunslet game, but then we went out and got the sort of result I knew the guys had in them,” said Gorley.

“We played some good stuff and defended really well.

“We’d spoken all week leading into Hunslet about improving on the basics and the areas we needed to, and they all worked really hard on that. Going into the game I could just tell there was something different in them. I need that feeling again this week.

“I am purposefully only doing the review of that game on Tuesday so that all the good things they did, and the not-so-good things, are fresh in their heads for the weekend, so that they can be in the right mindset to do it all again against Sheffield.”

Gorley also confirmed that Callum Phillips could make a return to the squad for the trip to South Yorkshire on Sunday.

The hooker picked up a hamstring injury ahead of the Salford game, but is now back in full training, as is Oscar Doran, who has also been out with a hamstring injury. He could also come back into contention for the weekend.
