Contested Possession
Pigeon Lofter replied to Sports Prophet's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
A tackle used to be when forward progress was stopped, allowing for an immediate PTB and continue a fast attack. Now players are thrown around like a rag doll and then often suffocated by some of the opposition lying on top of them. Apparently, thats necessary before the refereee calls "held". The human body can't take that abuse for long, hence why many many amateur teams have disbanded and even the pro clubs have to field academy players to make up for the injuries incurred. Pro teams can struggle to name 17 fit players because of the battering they get going through a season. Rugby League need to redefine a tackle if it's going to try and increase participation numbers, or reduce the level and severity of injuries of those that continue to play. I certainly wouldn't consider playing the modern game, it's stretching the limits of what the human body can realistically endure, getting thrown around and dragged god know where by a gang of opponents isn't my idea of playing sport at the weekend. -

Was listening to the online match commentary, but had to do something else as it was depressing. Oldham are dire tonight, if I had paid to watch that match I doubt I would return in a hurry, the Oldham players almost seem uninterested in competing. Sad that the biggest crowd of the season are treated to that showing.

Huddersfieid should be ashamed of themselves for spearheading the boardroom campaign to eject Catalans from Super League, and then embarrasing themselves with lethargic performances on the pitch and dreadful attendances in the stadium. It's looking increasingly likely that one team playing today will be ejected from Super League before very long, and it's not going to be Catalans.

Which is how the poll is set, it's one or the other, not both. "Would you prefer our home games to be played on a Friday night or Sunday afternoon?" When I used to go to 'Sheddings, it was a Saturday afternoon, or a Tuesday under the lights, neither of which is an option anymore.

Judging from the match commentary, it didn't come across as "magnificent" by any stretch of the imagination. But a hard fought victory against very formidable opposition for sure. The momentum is building nicely!
