RL in London, a personal reflection
langpark replied to EssexRL's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
How do London's amateur participation numbers compare to regions such as the north-east or even Cumbria? Does anyone have the figures? -

I think calling it a 'scam' is rather excessive, harsh and malicious. I donated a small amount to this campaign. I did so knowing that their future was (still is) extremely uncertain. My understanding was, that they were about 10k in the hole, and this fundraiser would have allowed them to proceed onto the next chapter with a clean slate. I do not feel 'robbed'. And as someone who has spent a large chunk of my life involved in grassroots rugby league, believe me, there is not 'profit' to be made from amateur rugby league. So basically, we all chipped in to lessen somebody's (Skolar's owners?) debts, that is my take on the situation. As bad as things are looking, we should not despair. It seems certain that they will withdraw this season, let's hope they can regroup and then re-enter next season at any level whatsoever. -
It is quite frustrating trying to find details on the BSL competition, they seem to play a lot of games, but they put out very little info.

Disagree. A player goes down, the others choose not to tackle him and there is an awkward stand off. How long do we wait? For the full-time siren?

Well because obviously playing numbers in Aus and NZ are in the tens of thousands, so they have plenty of depth there to make tiered rep teams. Europe is a polar opposite of that and some of the regions your mention only currently have one active nation there at the moment, for example: * Scandinavia / Nordic Countries - right now, this would only be Norway. * Balkans / Baltic States - Would basically be the Serbian national team maybe with a bolter from Albania, Montenegro and/or Bulgaria in there as well. * Mediterranean / Southern Europe - Greece, Lebanon? (Malta, Italy, Turkey seem quite inactive lately) * Eastern Europe - Ukraine, with maybe a player or two from Poland. * Central Europe - Czech RL only * Western Europe (Excluding France) - Netherlands, with a couple of German players. * British Isles (Domestic comp players in Wales, Scotland and Ireland) - Ok this would probably be the most mixed team, but would expect the majority to still be Welsh. I think it is a non-starter. Cost would be high. If teams were indeed made up of players from multiple countries, then even playing home matches would be expensive. Not to mention they would get no IRL financial support as they are not proper international matches. And as I said earlier, still does not achieve anything. Would Balkans vs Mediterranean, for example, really be that different (or that higher standard of match) than Serbia vs Greece? The answer is no.

1,303 at Oldham vs Newcastle 891 (unconfirmed) at Rochdale vs Cornwall.

Will a team from Elite 1 drop down or will simply it expand by one team?

Does today's winner get promoted to Elite 1?

Definitely, there is no doubt that playing there is limiting their potential to grow. It seems a shame that the hill on the other side was completely empty, they should let fans into that area as well.

2k capacity at Championship level is terrible. Let's hope that new proposed stadium gets built!
