Sir Billy Boston MBE RIP
Padge replied to Cumbrian Fanatic's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
Just some perspective of how Sir Billy is regarded in Wigan. He has, and it was the first, a pavement star on what was Believe Square. He has a statue on what was Belive Square, the highest point in WIgan town centre. Believe Square has now been renamed Sir Billy Boston Square. There is a medical centre in Wigan named Boston House in honour of the man. A stand at the Brick Community Stadium is named after him, the Sir Billy Boston Stand, as was a stand at Central Park. (without the Sir) A pub local to where he lived, The Bold Hotel changed its swing sign outside from the ship The Bold to aan image of Sir Billy, the landlord who commissioned it at the time was a Saints supporter. At his biography book launch at the Brocket Hotel the place was packed, modest as ever he got up and said I didn't expect anybody to be here, who wants to know what an old rugby player did fifty years ago. Outside of Wigan he is part of a group statue at Wembley and also in Cardiff. -
Sir Billy Boston MBE RIP

Sir Billy's funeral today was a beautiful send off for a great man. Thousands lined the streets along the route of his cortege. At the service in the stadium amongst the vast numbers in attendance was a local MP and PM, no photo ops, no it's about me, just one other quite mourner paying respects. -
Retirement - how did you adjust?
Padge replied to Copa's topic in Any Other Business / Any Other Sports
I adjusted easily, I am into photography so more time for that and time to revisit old photographs and edit/redit them. I am into history (especially local) so researching verious things keeps me quite busy. Me and the wife ensure we get out to socialise at least twicce a week, often jumping a train to somewhere nearby to try some interesting pubs. With a retired wife who loves her garden she has found me loads of little, and not so little, jobs she wants doing. Filling time is never, ever, a problem. -
You know when you’re getting old when….

Your on holiday and retired to the hotel at 10:00PM for a nightcap before retiring and while sat there you are watching people just turning out for the night.
