1895 Cup Final gives Swinton Lions a conundrum

SWINTON LIONS chief executive Steve Wild says the club are in contact with both the RFL and London Broncos over the rearrangement of their forthcoming Championship match in the capital.

It was scheduled for Sunday, August 30 at the Cherry Red Records Stadium in Wimbledon, as part of the final round of regular-season second-tier fixtures.

But London have reached the 1895 Cup final, in which they will meet Widnes at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31 (3.00).

That means new dates will have to be found for both the London versus Swinton and Sheffield versus Widnes league matches.

However Swinton have no blank weekends between now and then, and say the logistics of a part-time team going to London in midweek present major problems.

“Given most players are working during the week, it would be very difficult, if not  impossible, to get a squad down there,” said Wild.

“It wouldn’t be just the day of the game either, because we wouldn’t be getting back until the middle of the night, and that would have a knock-on effect.

“It’s a scenario we were aware of given London’s good form, and something we had already flagged up. We are now in discussions to see what solution can be found.”
