YORK KNIGHTS coach Mark Applegarth believes he has brought in another leader in Australian prop Blake Lawrie as he works to build on an encouraging first Super League season which brought nine wins.
Hot on the heels of versatile Zak Hardaker’s recruitment from Hull FC, the minster-city club have confirmed the signing of 29-year-old Lawrie from St George Illawarra Dragons on a two-year contract with a further-year option.
Also capable at loose-forward, he has made more than 170 NRL appearances and will help replace his retiring compatriot Paul Vaughan.
“I’m really excited to be joining. York have plenty of ambition and I’m looking forward to being part of what they’re building,” said the previous one-club man.
“I’m coming over to play my best footy, add to the group and help the club compete at the highest level.”
Applegarth added: “We’re delighted to have Blake over the line. He’s a proven top-level middle.
“Not only will he bring a high standard on the park but his leadership will be vital off it as well as we look to push to the next level.
“I’m really looking forward to getting to know Blake and his family and can’t wait to see him in a Knights shirt.”
York had already recruited Australian forward Cameron McInnes from Cronulla Sharks and Wakefield Trinity fullback Max Jowitt.
