TOM BRISCOE played his last game of professional Rugby League for Hull FC against Leeds Rhinos at AMT Headingley on Friday night, playing a key role as Hull shocked their hosts by winning 18-12.
And, at the age of 36, he will be almost unique in Rugby League in going into retirement as the holder of both a first degree (which he obtained in 2020) and a PhD, which he obtained from Leeds Beckett University in July this year.
Briscoe has acknowledged the help he received from Rugby League Cares, the organisation created by the RFL that helps players transition into the workforce after retiring from Rugby League, which includes the provision of education grants.
And Briscoe, who made his Super League debut in 2008, was always intent on pursuing his education alongside his playing career.
“When I left Hull for Leeds I became aware of the partnership between the Rhinos and Leeds Beckett University,” he said.
“I got a chance to start the sport and exercise science degree at the end of 2014 – it took six years because I was a part-time student, which took me to the Covid year. And at the back end of that, in lectures and classes, I got interested in what it would take to be a lecturer myself.
“Rugby League Cares have educational grants available for players in the Super League and the Championship, and without a doubt they’ve been a big help to me.”
Briscoe’s PhD research was focused on sports physiology and performance of female rugby players and player pathways for female players.
“I’m incredibly proud that my research has contributed to a better understanding of the physical development of female Rugby League players. More importantly, I hope it helps shape the future of the women’s game and provides coaches and practitioners with evidence that can make a real difference.”
Other Super League players who have now played their last games before going into retirement from the eight clubs that haven’t qualified for the play-offs include: Jonny Lomax and Mark Percival (St Helens), Benjamin Garcia and Tommy Makinson (Catalans), Paul Vaughan (York), Joe Westerman (Castleford).
