Adam Sidlow retires at 38 after 20-year career

FORMER Super League prop Adam Sidlow has brought his 20-year playing career to an end, announcing his retirement at the age of 38.

Sidlow had initially committed to playing another season with Swinton Lions, the eighth different club he has represented during his career.

But that will no longer be the case, with Sidlow saying: “With a heavy heart and regret, I’ve come to the decision that it’s time for me to hang my boots up.

“I’d like to thank Swinton for the past year. It was a great way to finish my career with a club with such a rich heritage.

“Personal thanks to the board, all staff involved with helping me, all of the fans and especially the players. I wish nothing but the best for the club in the future.”

Sidlow began his career with Widnes Vikings before the first of two spells at Salford Red Devils (then City Reds) between 2008 and 2012.

He then spent four years at each of Bradford Bulls and Toronto Wolfpack, experiencing the liquidation of the former club and collapse of the latter’s project.

As co-captain, he led Leigh Centurions to the 1895 Cup and Championship title in 2022 – a fourth career promotion after Salford in 2008 and Toronto in 2017 (from League One) and 2019.

A two-year return to Salford was followed by a final campaign at Swinton, while Sidlow also wore the colours of Workington Town and Oldham in his career during loan spells.

In total he made 384 professional appearances, 150 of them in the top flight.

Sidlow has been completing coaching qualifications in recent years with a view to continuing his involvement in the sport.

Swinton coach Paul Wood told Sidlow: “You’ve been fantastic over the last 12 months within our playing group.

“You should be very proud of your playing career – 384 games is a great achievement, and now you get to pass that experience on in your coaching.”
