Barrow Raiders’ Luke Cresswell ‘one of best fullbacks’ in Championship

BARROW RAIDERS coach Paul Crarey believes he has one of the best fullbacks in the Championship in local product Luke Cresswell.

The loyal 31-year-old one-club man, who has represented Cumbria, recently hit the 300-point mark for the Raiders, his 75th try coming in the 36-22 home win over Hunslet.

That was followed by number 76 in Sunday’s 56-12 win at Workington.

Cresswell made his debut in 2016, memorable because it was in France, a League One Super 8s clash with Toulouse.

The former Barrow Island junior is now closing in in 200 appearances for the town’s professional club, who have a long record of sourcing talent from local community clubs in their area.

“He’s unbelievable and probably one of the best fullbacks I’ve ever seen play on this ground,” said Crarey, 60, also a proud Barrovian.

“He could play at any level; he is Mr Consistency and Mr Support. He pulls us out of trouble time after time.

“He catches the high balls incredibly well and we don’t worry at all when the ball is up in the air.

“He is a fantastic lad and very easy to coach, and it’s a credit to him that he has hit that points milestone.”
