Birmingham Hurricanes say Aidan McGowan has earned extension

BIRMINGHAM HURRICANES like what they have seen of Aidan McGowan.

The 24-year-old former Huddersfield back arrived in late February following a short stint at Newcastle.

McGowan, who has been with Ireland for the Celtic Cup, scored 17 tries in 23 Hurricanes appearances, turning out at fullback, as a winger and in the centres.

Now Birmingham have taken up their option to extend his contract for 2027 as they aim to improve on finishing eighth and making stage two of the play-offs.

Coach Mark Dunning said: “We’re delighted Aidan is staying.

“Since joining us, he has had a really positive impact on our squad and his performances have undoubtedly earned him his extension.

“He’s the ultimate professional and drives standards throughout the team with both his actions and his words on and off the pitch.

“We’re looking forward to seeing Aidan kick on again in 2027 and take his game to the next level.”

McGowan, who made 17 appearances for Huddersfield and had loan spells at York, Dewsbury, Batley and Bradford, added: “I’m buzzing to be back for next year.

“I joined early this year and really enjoyed the season. The staff and the lads are great, as well as the loyal supporters, which is what the Hurricanes are built on.

“We’ve had a good year, and we are looking to improve on it and go all the way. I want to help us keep building the game in Birmingham.”

The Hurricanes, who are approaching a second season at Avery Fields in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham, had already agreed a contract extension with another back, Luis Roberts, who is on board to 2028.

And the club, which has changed its name from Midlands Hurricanes, say there are more squad developments coming.
