Cameron Scott savours sweet Wakefield Trinity farewell

CAMERON SCOTT soaked up the best possible farewell to Wakefield after scoring the opening try in their Grand Final triumph over Warrington.

“It feels amazing,” said the Bradford-bound centre, “and if I was to retire now, not that I’m going to, it would be as a happy man.

“Nobody gave us a chance at the start of the year, I think we were 66/1, and we had a pretty rocky start.

“At some stages, maybe making the Grand Final was a pipedream, but we just went week to week, and we started putting some results together.

“We had a tough run-in to the (regular) season, and at one point had three losses back-to-back. I wouldn’t say it was a worry, but it was a bit of a reset for us and we haven’t lost since then. We’ve were flying when we went into the play-offs.

“Even after we won at Wigan in the semi-finals, which gave us real confidence, people were writing us off and saying we didn’t have enough experience in the team to win a big game like this, but I thought the boys were fantastic.

“We front-loaded our defence – the middles were sensational – and our halves really controlled the play. Our work out of backfield was good and got us back up the pitch.

“It was basically the same blueprint as the week before. But we knew we had to do it on an even bigger stage, and we did.

“In the first half, we put our foot on the throttle and the (Jack Sinfield) field-goal was huge for us.

“Some great carries from Isaiah (Vagana) helped get us up the field and into a perfect spot for one, and while 18-0 was good, 19-0 was even better because it’s four scores.

“Then in the spells where Warrington looked like they were getting back into it, we managed to respond and cut their momentum.

“I’m leaving Wakefield, but that’s part of sport, and you accept it. Teams change and evolve at all clubs.”
