Danny Walker feels pain of Warrington Wolves’ Old Trafford loss

WARRINGTON hooker Danny Walker said he felt totally deflated after his side went down 23-10 to Wakefield Trinity in the Super League Grand Final.

The Wolves were dominated in the first half and could not come back in the second to defeat a resurgent Trinity at Old Trafford.

“It hurts,” Walker admitted. “We’ve worked so hard all year and to get so close, but to be so far away from victory. It hurts because we didn’t perform to our best, although fair play to Wakey, they were deserved winners.

“We just lacked a bit of physicality in the first half, a bit of intent. They ran a bit harder than us. There was no lack of effort, we tried our arses off. But they were just better than us on the day.”

Warrington went into half-time 19-0 behind but managed to pull a try back and they had the momentum with them when Corey Hall was sin-binned for a high tackle.

“We’ve thought we’d come that far,” Walker said.

“We’d come all this way, and we didn’t want to go out in that fashion. We wanted to have a dig. And if anyone could do it, we believed we could. But unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.”

Asked how views next season after such a disappointing Grand Final defeat, Walker was reluctant to speculate.

“I don’t know right now… We need to recharge,” he said.

“We’ve got a lot of new faces coming in. We’ll now have a bit of downtime, rest up, and then come back in and try and push again for it. But I’m not going to sit here and say we’re going to go and do it next year.

“But I’m not going to say that we can’t, either. We’ll have a dig and we’ll do exactly what we tried doing this year, building on the consistency that we’ve built up.”
