Tomkins and Richards share Goldthorpe Medal

Wigan may have suffered an agonising 27-26 defeat to Leeds Rhinos at the DW Stadium on Sunday night, but the Warriors can take some consolation in the fact that Sam Tomkins and Pat Richards are this season's joint winners of the Albert Goldthorpe Medal, after the final round of voting in Round 27 of the regular Super League season.

Richards drew level with teammate Tomkins on the last weekend of the season, after being awarded two points by our match reporter at the DW Stadium for his performance against Bradford Bulls, on a night he equalled the Super League points record of Andy Farrell (388 points in a regular season). He also broke the club Super League try-scoring record.

Tomkins has also been a standout from round 1 to 27, either from stand-off or fullback. He wins the Albert Goldthorpe Medal a year after he was chosen as the Albert Goldthorpe Rookie of the Year for 2009.

Both players will receive a solid gold medal at the Albert Goldthorpe Dinner, which is due to be held at Warrington's Halliwell Jones Stadium this evening.
"Both Sam and Pat have had outstanding seasons, and I think they have been worthy winners," said Rugby League Express editor Martyn Sadler.

"The medals will be presented by the legendary Alex Murphy, and it is great to see two players who are surely following in Alex's brilliant footsteps, despite their disappointing play-off defeat on Sunday evening."

This season's Albert Goldthorpe Rookie of the Year, who will receive a solid silver medal, will be revealed at the ceremony, while Rugby League Express will also present a Lifetime Achievement Award to a player who has played a prominent role within the game for many years.

Rugby League Express has also revealed the Albert Goldthorpe Team of the Year, made up of the highest ranked players in the Albert Goldthorpe table for each position.

Nine players who make the Albert Goldthorpe team were also selected in last week's Engage Super League Dream Team.

Brett Hodgson, Amos Roberts, Chris Bridge and Ben Galea feature in the Albert Goldthorpe team, but failed to make the Dream Team.
Paul Wellens, Keith Senior, Ryan Hall and Joel Tomkins gained selection in the Dream Team, but failed to make the Albert Goldthorpe Team of the Year.

In my humble opinion, Pat should have got it outright, and it takes something away sharing it with Sam

Sams time will come, and he got rookie last year

Congrats to all though

(Just found out Albert Goldthorpe's birthday is the same as mine (not the year) and Lee's grandad had the same name - spooky)
