I found this while looking up (googling!) Cunk on Britain and I thought about the US in that statement. For a start I thought all drama tended to show how alike we are. But then I thought about how we can't agree about anything and some of the things we get up to in the "not agreeing" send clear messages about how hard it is to imagine any kind of connection between human beings that allows them to act as a group small or large in any way that isn't hateful and detestable and we can't even agree about what those might be. So in the quote the us is of course Brits which if this forum is anything to go by have nothing in common other than a language (well nearly) and a flag (?) and being on the same island!

If I understand it correctly then I disagree with it, whenever I've met people from an "opposing" group I've generally found more points of agreement than disagreement, in some cases those points of disagreement are fairly fundamental but as a species we all have similar aspirations and challenges. It is generally when others with vested interests start trying to influence our opinions based on our differences that we end up with conflict, our greatest achievements usually come by ignoring our differences and concentrating on our common desires.

No I think people do that off their own bat and any stirring just convinces them they were correct all along.

I'm trying to avoid mentioning evidence for this as it will bring the thread integrity police out which is evidence in itself.

The writer I quoted assumed he shared something with me and we were different from funny foreigners and we have got far too used to saying and hearing stuff like this.
