S3 E6 WHO NEEDS ENEMIESĀ
In Madrid the wife of Cliff Underwood, SIS man returns to their villa. She enters the kitchen and sees a note on the worktop, it reads, " you know why." Alarmed she runs into the garden calling out " Cliff?"
In the swimming pool the body of Underwood floats, dead.
Willie is despatched.
Meanwhile Burnside is having a medical, carried out by SIS doctor Paddy O'Toole who asks probing questions as he examines Neil.
O'T " getting enough sleep?"
B " when I can"

O'T " what about headaches?"
B " only professional ones"
O'T " and your sex life?"
B " that's my business. Well, what's the verdict?"
O'T " oh your fit enough, but try to relax more."
Burnside gets dressed while rather sarcastically saying, " thanks Doc I'll remember that."
After Neil leaves the doc telephones Peele the SIS deputy chief.
P " Hello Paddy, top of the morning to you."
O'T "just seen your man, he is showing signs of stress and is heading for a fall, needs to be rested"
In Madrid Willie has discovered Underwood was turning a Russian diplomat that he met at a party . The Russian, Perchenko, promised Underwood some papers to prove his intent.
Peele gleefully sees C and reports on Burnside 's medical.
P " I took the liberty of asking Paddy O'Toole to look for stress, he phoned back and confirmed it. Burnside is feared rather than respected and I think that's dangerous. He is riding for a fall. This might be the time to reappraise your departmental directors"
C "what you're saying is , get rid of Burnside."
P " I wouldn't put it as strongly as that sir."
C " how would you put it?"
P " I am beginning to have doubts about his effectiveness. Also he's deceitful and is wealding too much power in this building for my liking."
C " I was under the impression he had mended his ways"
P " probably being more careful sir"
C " okay Matthew I take note of what you say."
Later Burnside reports to Peele the Madrid situation, in the office is Paul Dalgety.
B " Paul says he was expecting something from Underwood any day now, "
P " from this Perchenko"
B " doesn't explain his suicide unless it was stage managed, a killing disguised, the KGB may have discovered Underwood's turning of their man"
P " any ideas on a replacement for Underwood?"
B " not yet, it's not exactly a vital area, Spain"
Neil leaves, leaving the new intelligence director, Paul Dalgety, with Peele. Dalgety is upper class , young, Eton educated, and Neil doesn't like him.
Dalgety waits for Burnside to go then hands Peele an envelope inside is a computer print out.

lpFMfAbEEZRQfahoUqoz.png
P " my god, a CIA assessment of SIS strengths and weaknesses. How did we get this?"
D "it may be the fruit of the Underwood operation that Neil mentioned."
P " what is it, second hand goods"
D " I'd say so sir, a CIA double passes it to Perchenko who passed it to Underwood. Not particularly important. "
P " proof of future good intentions. "
D "It came in this mornings diplomatic pouch from Madrid. You see why I didn't say anything just now when you read the entry next to Burnside"
P (reading) " I do indeed, important Burnside doesn't see it"
Peele takes it to C, who reads it out loud,
C " Burnside, an officer who plays a one man band and is causing friction and distrust. They don't mince words"
P " don't need to sir it was never intended for our eyes. Did you speak to Wellingham about our conversation?"
C " yes, he was surprisingly sympathetic, felt moving Burnside would be good for all concerned."
P " then you agree?"
C " yes"
P " I'd suggest a straight swap Dalgety for Burnside"
C " but Burnside couldn't stay here as D Int, we'd have to find somewhere else for him"
P" somewhere he couldn't build another empire"
C " I don't want him to think he's being fired!"
P " Oh there's no need for that."
Willie is in Spain carrying out investigations at SIS office in Madrid, before leaving he had a flaming row with Burnside over his continuing affair with Marianne Straker, Burnside's secretary, which he feels is a security threat. Willie is adamant to continue the relationship, hence this conversation when Burnside phones him in Madrid.
B " what are you doing?"
W " carrying out the brief"
B " stuff the brief"
W " look do you want me to do the job properly or not."
B " I want you to find out why Underwood killed himself. Get off your ###### and start digging."
W " look, get off my back, if you don't trust me get someone else out here"
Neil meets Geoff Ross, CIA man based at U.S embassy for a drink, and tells him about Underwood.
allinagoodcause.jpg
R " how did he do it?"
B " drowned himself first in whisky then in his pool"
R " nice one"
B " I can't rule out the possibility of a well disguised hit. Find out what you can Geoff."

Burnside with Peele,
P " have you considered a replacement for Underwood yet?"
B " not yet no"
P " we're going to recommend you get the job Neil. Congratulations on your promotion Neil!"
Burnside is shocked, almost laughing. Later sitting grim faced in C' office.
C " I understand you are not happy with the appointment in Madrid. It is promotion"
B " sideways possibly."
C " not necessarily, the deputy chief was Head of Station before coming here."
B " he was Head of Station Hong Kong not Madrid. May I know the reasons for this decision."
C " certainly you may it has been apparent for some time to your contemporaries that your tendency to run a one man band is causing friction and distrust. On top of that your medical report indicates signs of stress, and now a vacancy has come up. You've been D Ops for three years, you're due for relief. I've spoken to Wellingham and he has given his blessing"
B " wrapped it up very nicely, you've been angling for a reason to get rid of me ever since you took over"
C " all I've been angling for is you to run your department as efficiently as possible, no more, try to see things from my perspective, I have in you a talented officer, with a good grasp of the nuances of foreign affairs, but you drive yourself too hard, to the overall detriment of SIS. Now a vacancy has arisen"
B " who's taking over?"
C " I have a relief nominated but I'm not prepared to name him, I know you'll give your best before the changeover and I'm putting you forward for an award, so I expect we'll see your name in the new years honours list"
Burnside departs a gutted and embittered man.
A chat with CIA man Geoff Ross in the local McDonalds.
x1080.jpeg
R." Why are they getting rid of you"
B " they say it's stress on my part"
R " perhaps they're right, you sure don't take it easy on yourself. When was last time you relaxed, or read a book"
B " I've got better things to do"
R " so give, who's your replacement?"
B " nothing definite, but Dalgety is looking eager, the old school tie is back in fashion"
R " come on that garbage went out with Philby, do you think he can cope?"
B " he appears to cope extremely well, and as any old Etonian will tell you, that's all that matters"
R " you've got to fight this Neil"
B " well, I think it's too late"
Marianne Straker, secretary, is in Burnside's office;
( Sue Holderness and Roy Marsden)
The-Sandbaggers-010.jpg
M " the buzz is C asked for your personnel file, and Peele inquired about an immersion course in Spanish, I'm right aren't I ?"
B " yes"
M." Look, sack me if you want but certain things need to be said. I wanted to be your secretary no one else's. Even though you appear to be made of steel, it was apparent that you weren't. The things you think are strengths are actually signs of weakness, you are scared of alcohol so you never drink, you are scared of reaching out to people, so you live the life of a monk. The result, you're difficult to work with, and you're getting left in the cold. You see people entering this office, but I see them on the way out. You can't live like that, not for very long, something has to give!" Marianne runs out and puffs out her cheeks in her own office, surprised with herself for having the courage to say all that.
That evening Burnside goes for his usual 2am walk in Leicester Square, central London, not too far from the office.
He is suddenly surrounded by thugs, and kicked unconscious.
The next day ,Peele and Dalgety;
P "any more information about Neil's mugging?"
D " apparently just a simple mugging, Neil often takes a stroll in the small hours"
P "amazing how little one knows someone until something like this happens. Probably a blessing in disguise Paul, gives you a chance to look over your new department before the change over"
D " I've brought myself up to speed on what's happening, and recalled Caine from Madrid"
Dalgety settling in very nicely thank you!

Willie is back and greets Marianne in her office.
W " where's the boss?"
M " in hospital, he was bopped on the head last night, mugged"
W " I wonder why Dalgety took my call"
M " that's the other news, Dalgety is taking over, the drums have been beating all night"
W " they're getting rid of Burnside?"
M " easing him out"
W " what are they going to do with him?"
M " can't you guess?"
W " no"
M " well there's a vacancy somewhere isn't there?"
W " not Madrid!?"
M " Mike's gone to visit him now."
Sandbagger number 2 Mike Wallace is at the bedside, Burnside looks rough.

whoneedsenemies.jpg
MW " got a message for you sir from D Int. He says rest and relax and he's taking care of everything."
B ( sarcastically) " I'll bet he is."
MW " latest rumour is he's going to be the new D Ops."
B " who told you?"
MW " Oh, first hand observation, he's wandering around the office like someone who knows something good about his own future. He's recalled Willie from Madrid and questioned me for an hour today about what I thought of the job."
Dalgety is with C , toadying up to him ,
D " I brought myself up to speed with developments sir, and recalled Caine, so we'll have both Sandbaggers available should they be needed for the Hong Kong operation. "
C " thank you Dalgety. "
Later that day Burnside, with a black eye releases himself from hospital much to the nurse's annoyance. She follows him to the hospital front entrance pleading,
Nurse ," what are you doing Mr Burnside?"
B " discharging myself."
Nurse " Then you're a bigger fool than I thought, Mr Burnside there might be complications."
B " I'm used to those."
(Ray Lonnen is Willie)

Back at HQ, Willie hands him a piece of a computer print out he found hidden behind a filing cabinet in Madrid.
W " found it behind Underwood's filing cabinet, looks like he lost it accidentally on purpose"
B (reading) " I don't blame him. Where's the rest?"
W " it was sent by pouch a few days ago. Why didn't you tell me?"
B " I didn't know anything about it. Hang on, are you telling me someone knew we had a CIA printout here and said nothing!"
Neil phones Dalgety asking him to come over to his office.
W " I've heard about Madrid, are you going to fight that?"
B " now I can , I've got something to fight with, let's see how the public school blue eyed boy talks his way out of this"
xifgrCsl0hviwhUQCSfR.png
Dalgety enters, grinning like a man who knows he'll soon have this office as the new D Ops, and whistles at Burnside's black eye.
D " phew, Neil you really shouldn't be here"
B " Caine has discovered why Underwood committed suicide"
D " has he by God!"
B " And I've discovered that you failed to pass the contents of the diplomatic bag that arrived from Madrid."
D " boring stuff, ports and logistics"
B " wasn't there a CIA printout?"
D " erm...yes"
B " why wasn't I shown it?"
D " it was a case of need to know, and as your friendship with Ross is a little too friendly"
B " since when do you decide who gets put on the distribution list?"
D " look Neil, Peele was afraid you'd take it to Ross"
B " well I want to see it now"
D " difficult , Peele has it"
B " okay I'll ask him"
D " please don't Neil, it'll make me look bad"
B " tough, should have thought of that before, it's all a question of whose side you're on"
In Peele's office;
P " it was a question of need to know, and as you'll soon be leaving"
B " come to that has it, Burnside versus the rest"
P " please Neil"
B " okay I'll go to Ross"
P " he's unlikely to play ball, even if he is you don't know what to ask for"
B " I could show him this"
P " what's that?"
B " a CIA report found behind Underwood's filing cabinet, it claims Underwood's wife is a lesbian who's had a string of affairs, now what else do the CIA know about us that we didn't know ourselves?"
Peele takes the printout from his desk.
( Jerome Willis is Peele)
images (3).jpeg
P " very well, but C has stated it is now U.K. eyes only"
Burnside reads it.
B " ha! Friction and distrust I wonder where C got that from"
P " he didn't write it Neil"
B " what do you want, a bowl of water to wash your hands too?"
P " if I was you I'd make a dignified exit Neil. Can I see your portion of the printout"
B " I'll let you have it when I've finished with it sir "
Burnside leaves, Peele goes to see C
P " personally I don't trust him, he's a disappointed and embittered man"
C " you think he'll go to Ross?"
P " I'll lay odds on it"
C " and poison the special relationship"

In the US embassy, Geoff Ross's office.

B " Cliff Underwood committed suicide because his wife was a lesbian"
R " was she?"
B " you knew before me"
R " okay, how would I know that?"
B ' don't you even read the reports your own office originates?"
R " perhaps that bang on the head did more damage than first thought! Come on Neil, let me in on the secret"
B " the head of CIA London which I believe is you, produced a report on SIS claiming I'm causing friction and distrust and Cliff Underwood's wife was having a string of lesbian affairs"
Burnside thrusts the piece of it he has at Ross who reads it ,
R " okay, where's the rest of it?"
B " Peele has it"
Ross goes to his filing cabinet and removes the original.
Ross (reading) "okay, Burnside, Neil, disliked by the head of SIS for his methods, but has won respect rather than friends, a mainstay of the organization that would be severely weakened without him. Underwood Clifford, a devoted family man with a deep knowledge of his job. That's it Neil, that's all we said, you've been set up, along with the whole of SIS"
Burnside is showing the true report to Peele and C.
C " so it was the KGB"
B " yes, they set Perchenko up as a double, pass the fake report to Underwood, who passed it to us, knowing we'd believe anything printed on official looking CIA printout"
P "who needs enemies when we've got computers"
C " do you want to remain D ops?"
B " offer based on an SIS assessment or a CIA one?"
C " my assessment of you Burnside"
B " then I accept sir"
Burnside jauntily leaves the office , Dalgety is coming toward him smiling as usual and nods at Neil, who smiles back, he knows when Dalgety steps into C's office that smile will soon vanish.

FINAL EPISODEĀ

S3 E7Ā  OPPOSITEĀ  NUMBERSĀ

In Malta a vital conference is taking place. S.A.L.T. Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty. All the super powers are there.
Both sandbaggers have bodyguard duties, escorting Peele and Wellingham to and from the conference centre in their government DaimlerChrysler cars. It's actually quite boring for Willie and Mike, as during the day while the delegates discuss the sandbaggers have little to do.
While taking a stroll around the building they pass a man, who surreptitiously hands them note. Willie reads it, and reports back to Burnside at London HQ.

OzRUuBlyhxbqMpZavEhM.png
In C's office
B " a Yuri Filatov, double agent working for us, a KGB officer has asked to be lifted. He says he's not under suspicion but his nerve has gone and wants to defect and wants to meet me personally tomorrow"
C " okay you better get out there"

the-sandbaggers-tv-programme-series-3-1980-shutterstock-editorial-1260780s.jpg

The next day after meeting Filatov, Burnside meets up with Willie and Mike.
B " okay find somewhere we can stash Filatov until we can get him back to England"
W " assuming you get permission to lift him"
B " I'm going to lift him whether I get permission or not"
W " tired of working for SIS are you!?"
B " can you think of a better way to torpedo these talks"
W " ah you're on about that again"
B " SALT is a dangerous excuse for the West cut back on defense spending while Russia cons everybody and forges ahead"
W " well, if it's the usual response from the Russians, they'll say we've kidnapped their man"
B " exactly, and they can't sit at the table with kidnappers"
During conference lunch break Burnside sees Wellingham, who is obviously surprised to see Neil here.
B " a Yuri Filatov KGB working for us, we have to lift him today"
W " out of the question, I don't want anything to prejudice these talks"
B " we must lift him, we don't want to lose him sir"
W " Neil, you couldn't care less about him, all you're interested in is destroying SALT"
Burnside reports back to C in London.
C " if Sir Geoffrey said no it's no"
B " it'll be worth our jobs to make a stand"
C " if you're proposing to disobey, then you can clear your desk and be out of here by lunchtime. However I have an idea, suppose we lift Filatov but don't make any capital out of it publicity wise, in return the Russians don't rock the boat with allegations"
B " can I proceed without reference to Wellingham?"
C " no check again with him. Also you better get back.out there and stay until the conference ends. One more thing, if you do anything to sabotage these talks, nothing will save you, and don't count on Wellingham, he's a passionate believer in SALT and would be very unhappy to be stabbed in the back by you"
Burnside chats to Geoff Ross in Hyde Park before returning to Malta,
B " I'm going to smash up the talks Geoff"
R " by snatching Filatov. Don't do it Neil. One man can't change the world. Are you just trying to destroy yourself?"
B " go back to your comic books Geoff"
R " hell, you know I'm right, you've been backing lost causes for over a year"
B " this isn't a lost cause."
R " so what is it, a subtle way of destroying your career"
B " the future of the West goes ahead of any personal position of mine. If anything happens in Malta you'd keep quiet Geoff?"
R " I won't tell, but for God's sake, don't do it Neil.

But Burnside of couse does take Filatov, and hides him in a villa in Rabat just outside Valetta, he then casually strolls into the hotel where the Russian delegation are staying to see Nikolai Sarkisian of the KGB.
B " we've got Filatov, and can prove he's been working for us for years, so it's no use denying it, he will go on British tv and denounce your government and claim you have a missile base at Rostov that you haven't declared at the talks"
S " it's a lie"
B " that's what he's going to say, so the talks are doomed comrade" Burnside leaves pronto.
Later that day, Peele in his hotel room gets a knock on the door. Sarkisian walks in and introduces himself, he is Peele's opposite number in KGB, deputy director.
Sk " Mr Peele I want to say how disappointed I am you have accepted Yuri Filatov, I hope you understand our feelings"
P ( puzzled) " er..who is Filatov?"
Sk " you don't know?"
P " no"
Sk " Yuri Filatov, KGB officer, your Mr Burnside offered him , how you say, inducement to work for SIS, and for reasons I don't understand has accepted, and has gone to England"
P." are you sure?"
Sk " Mr Burnside told me this afternoon. If true we will be forced to retaliate"
P " you'll pull out of SALT?"
Sk " I don't know what the Americans will think of you, but the rest of the world must condemn you, all those who wish for an end to arms races"
Sitting by the pool,
Caine " Mike and Len Sheppard are with Filatov at the villa"
B " how is he"
C "anxious, just wants to get away"
B " tough"
C " no, he's a nice fella"
B " he's a defector"
C " so"
B " so don't shed tears for him"
C " I'm saving mine for you,
when Wellingham finds out he's going to crucify you"
B " he'll have to get in line"
C " are you on Valium!, you're being remarkably calm"
B " a lot more calm than the Russians I bet"
C " the proverbial should be hitting the fan about now..What d'you think will happen"
B " I don't know or care, so long as the Russians don't turn up tomorrow at the talks"
C " well if you go, I'll go too, it won't be the same without your ugly mug glaring at me"
B " I'm not resigning, they'll have to fire me, you'll probably be made D Ops"
C " don't think so, I haven't got the class"
Marching stern faced toward them is Wellingham and Peele.
W " you deliberately disobeyed an order"
B " what have I done?"
W " taken Filatov"
B " who says so"
W " Sarkisian, says you told him this afternoon"
B " when we take a defector we don't run around and tell the Russians. We know he's disappeared that's all, I had a proposal to put to you from C , but Filatov disappearing changed things, we take Filatov, but don't publicize it"
W " wouldn't have worked, the Russians are desperate to get out of the talks now. They put the current missile numbers on the table and we proved they were lying. I think their chief negotiator is on his way to Siberia"
Caine. " well that's it sir, they've screwed the talks up and maybe they've bumped off Filatov to manufacture an excuse"
W " Neil I don't want these talks stopped, we're running them , we may never get another chance"
B " I understand, this is your big moment, Sir Geoffrey Wellingham on the front cover of the colour supplements, and it could all be ruined by a miserable Russian who may have got himself shot"
W " I could have you fired for that"
B " then why don't you!"

Len Sheppard, last (seen in s3e2) young ambitious, newly married, the SIS man based in Malta has been doing the legwork for the sandbaggers, helping out, mainly sitting with Filatov at the villa. He comes home , sitting waiting for him is Peele.
Len " hello sir"
Peele " Mary is upstairs reading bedtime stories to the kids, how about you telling me one"
L" come again Sir?"
P " I want to say that whatever has been going on here, you were acting under orders from D Ops so you're in the clear, furthermore although we have a duty to Wellingham and the government our first loyalty must be to our service. I have a feeling if the whole truth got out we'd lose D Ops and both sandbaggers, so the truth must remain between us Len and I'll protect them. Now, does Burnside have a KGB man named Filatov?"
L " yes sir, hidden in Rabat"
P " write the address down, inexplicably the Russians will get this, but neither D Ops or the sandbaggers will be involved"
L." but they are there now with Filatov"
P " even Russians can turn a blind eye"
In the villa , the door bursts open KGB men push past Burnside Willie and Mike and grab Filatov and leave. Peele marches in ,
P " sit down, I have a lot to say and I want an attentive audience" Peele reads them the riot act.
Ā
The next day,
Wellingham " I hear Filatov was captured last night"
Burnside. " yes he was hiding out on his own"
W " yes that's what IĀ chooseĀ to believe too, I also believe Peele isn't the fool we've always taken him to be. You're lucky Neil, luckier than you deserve to be. I want you out of here now"

B " I'm on a flight out in one hour"
Burnside rejoins Willie and Mike.
Willie " we can't say we didn't try, but the Russians ran rings around us, at least they have no excuse to ditch the talks now. If Wellingham is right that's good news"
B " wait a minute, how can they get out of the talks and pay us back for taking Filatov?"
Mike " hit one of their own men!"
B " exactly, Wellingham would think it's one of you two acting on my orders"
M " would they really hit their own"
hUkCylOTxeJNEkEBTKJd.png
W " KGB would"
B " and it was their chief negotiator who screwed up the talks. Okay you two, follow the Russians. Track them from their hotel to the conference centre, get going , I've got a plane to catch"
The Russian fleet of cars arrives at the centre, Willie and Mike look on.
Mike" Filatov is in the lead car"
Willie. " Filatov!!?" Willie sees a sniper on the roof aiming his gun. Filatov is bundled out of the car, Willie rushes forward,
W " Yuri Watch out!" Shot fires and hits Willie. Mike runs forward to help Willie , too late.....dead.

Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā Ā BLAKE'S 7

S1 E1. The Way Back
Before the series starts, Roj Blake had been a resistance leader against the totalitarian Federation that had murdered his family. Instead of killing him as a martyr, the Federation erased his memories and reprogrammed him into a content citizen. One day, Blake is led outside the city dome by a friend who is really a fellow resistance member. Blake then attends an illegal meeting to protest the unpopular government policies where he is told of his past and what the Federation did to him. In disbelief, Blake walks off to thinkā€”just as a Federation security squad arrives and efficiently shoots everybody down. As Blake witnesses the horror that unfolds, it re-awakes his suppressed memories. When the government finds out his memory has returned, he is arrested on trumped-up charges of child molestation and sentenced to the prison colony on Cygnus Alpha. Blake urges Tel Varon, a public defender at his trial, to dig deeper for evidence of his innocence. Varon hesitantly does so and learns the victims' statements were indeed fabricated. He then goes with his wife Maja to the site of the massacre, and records evidence of the slaughter. However, he and his wife are killed by a Federation agent as they return to the city. Meanwhile, Blake is put aboard the transport shipĀ London, and sent on his way to Cygnus Alpha. Along the way he meets the talented thief Vila Restel and the smuggler pilot Jenna Stannis.

S1 E2. Space Fall
Blake is introduced to Kerr Avon who used his technical prowess to nearly get away with stealing five million credits from the Federation banking system. Knowing he has a good pilot (Jenna), a lockpick expert (Vila) and now a computer specialist (Avon), Blake devises a plan to hijack theĀ London. He also gains the help of a physically imposing man, Olag Gan who agrees to be his strong arm. When theĀ LondonĀ enters a battle between unidentified ships, Blake unleashes his mutiny plan but fails to take over. Later, theĀ LondonĀ comes upon an abandoned unidentified vessel and the first officer, Sub-Commander Raiker, persuades the captain to capture it for a salvage reward. Losing some of his men to lethal traps on the ship, Raiker sends Blake, Jenna and Avon in. Blake disables the trap and Jenna is able to control the ship, allowing their escape.

Blake, Jenna, and Avon commandeer the alien ship and discover the mind-reading control computer Zen who renames the ship theĀ LiberatorĀ after drawing the word from Jenna's thoughts. Exploring the ship, they find a wealth of advanced technology including a fully functional teleportation system and an armoury of weapons. Next, Blake follows theĀ LondonĀ to Cygnus Alpha and mounts a rescue to save Vila and Gan from the sadistic religious cult that runs the prison world. Blake infiltrates the complex only to find that his friends and the other prisoners have succumbed to the "Curse of Cygnus", a medical condition caused by the planet's atmosphere; the only treatment is a drug controlled by the fanatical cult leader Vargas. Blake eventually leads a breakout with Gan and Vila, while on theĀ Liberator, Jenna and Avon consider abandoning Blake after losing contact. Jenna holds out for Blakeā€”who makes it back with Vila and Gan, but along with Vargas who holds them prisoner. While Vargas rants about using the ship to rule the universe, he steps back onto the teleport pad and Blake beams him into the vacuum of space.

4. Time Squad
Blake decides to destroy a Federation communications complex at Saurian Major as the first major strike against the Federation. Along the way, a distress call leads theĀ LiberatorĀ to an escape pod with cryogenically frozen beings aboard. Arriving at the Saurian complex, Blake teleports down with Avon and Vila and searches for other resistance fighters to help him take out the installation. They meet an Auron woman named Cally whom Blake convinces to help them. Back on theĀ Liberator, Gan and Jenna deal with the thawed beings who turn out to be dangerous killers conditioned to protect the genetic stock aboard their pod. On the planet, Blake and his team successfully infiltrate the complex where Avon overrides the safety protocols of a reactor; seconds before the explosion an injured Gan teleports the team to safety. Blake rescues Jenna, and they dispose of the pod in deep space. Cally accepts Blake's offer to join theĀ LiberatorĀ crew.

S1 E5. The Web

Under psychic control, Cally sabotages theĀ LiberatorĀ bring it to an uncharted world, where it becomes trapped in a cloud of strange web-like strands encompassing the planet. Jenna is momentarily possessed and relays a message from the inhabitants of the planet, a group of people known as "The Lost", descendants of Cally's home planet Auron. Blake teleports down to meet The Lost who offer a means to escape the web, but require energy cells from theĀ LiberatorĀ as payment. Blake gives them the cells, but discovers The Lost will use the energy to destroy another race of creatures known as Decimas whom The Lost created through genetic engineering. Not wanting to be party to genocide, Blake tries to stop them and to free his ship. Eventually the Decimas invade the complex and destroy their creators. In the midst of the confusion, Blake and Avon succeed in activating a fungicide beam which creates a clear passage through the web, enabling them to escape ahead of the oncoming Federation Pursuit Ships.

S1 E6. Seek Locate Destroy

Blake and his crew infiltrate a Federation base on the planet Centero to steal a decryption cipher. During their escape, Cally is separated from them and loses her teleport bracelet during a struggle. The others learn she is missing only after returning to theĀ Liberator. As news of Blake's exploits begin to spread, Federation Supreme Commander Servalan under pressure from the Federation High Council, appoints Space CommanderTravis to eliminate the fugitives, although this is met with disapproval by her colleagues. Travis, however, takes personal pleasure in accepting the assignment as he had lost both an eye and an arm (having replaced the latter with a cybernetic limb) during the original confrontation to capture Blake on Earth. When Travis finds Cally alive, he uses her as bait in a trap for Blake. Blake initiates a hit-and-run attack to rescue Cally, during which he manages to damage Travis' cybernetic hand before escaping; Travis vows revenge.

S1 E7. Mission To Destiny

TheĀ LiberatorĀ encounters the freighterĀ OrtegaĀ drifting in uncontrolled circles in space. After boarding, Blake, Avon and Cally find most of the crew unconscious, one of the crew murdered, and the flight control systems deliberately smashed. When the survivors awaken, their leader Dr. Kendall explains their important mission to deliver a valuable energy substance called the neutrotope to their home world of Destiny, to halt a fungal contamination in the food supply. Blake decides to deliver the neutrotope himself with theĀ Liberator, while Avon and Cally remain to help repair theĀ OrtegaĀ and identify who is behind the murder and sabotage.

Space Commander Travis and his three Federation warships have tracked theĀ LiberatorĀ to an uncharted planet where Blake, Jenna, and Gan are investigating the surface. After the three explore the ruins of an ancient civilisation, they hurriedly return to theĀ LiberatorĀ as Travis closes in to attack. With theĀ LiberatorĀ low on energy reserves, Blake decides not to run but to face his enemy head-on. Suddenly, a powerful being named Sinofar, who is intolerant of war, cripples the ships and sends Blake and Jenna back to the planet. S1 E9. Project Avalon

Space Commander Travis has captured a resistance leader named Avalon, and holds her captive in a Federation lab located underground on a frigid planet. Avalon had earlier contacted Blake to take her to a newly constructed resistance base, and Blake is determined to rescue her. After pulling off the rescue, Blake discovers he has instead saved an android clone of Avalon, which is programmed to kill everyone aboard theĀ LiberatorĀ by releasing a deadly, fast-acting virus.

S1 E10. Breakdown

A behavioural "limiter" implant in Gan's brain malfunctions and he violently threatens the lives of the crew. Once he is captured and sedated, Blake rushes to get him to a nearby medical facility called XK-72, but the route takes theĀ LiberatorĀ through a dangerous gravity vortex. The suicidal manoeuvre causes the argumentative Avon to declare that he is quitting Blake's team for good. Once at the medical facility, a surgeon named Kayn and his aide teleport to theĀ LiberatorĀ to operate on Gan, but Kayn delays the procedure when he becomes suspicious of Blake. Meanwhile, Avon stays behind on the station to negotiate with the staff for sanctuary, but soon discovers that someone has already alerted the Federation to Blake's arrival, and gunships are on the way.

S1 E11. Bounty

Blake locates President Sarkoff, the deposed leader of the planet Lindor, which is on the verge of civil war. If war breaks out, the Federation will send in "peacekeeping" forces and easily annex it. While Blake urges the president to take back his leadership, theĀ LiberatorĀ answers a distress call from another ship; it turns out to be from a notorious bounty hunter, Tarvin, a former colleague of Jenna, who hijacks theĀ LiberatorĀ and tries to cash in on the 13 million credit reward on the crew's heads. Jenna seemingly switches sides and teams up again with Tarvin. Sarkoff, confidence shot after being deposed must regain his mental strength to help Blake defeat Tarvin.

S1 E12. Deliverance
After theĀ LiberatorĀ crew witnesses a small ship explode above the planet Cephlon, Avon, Vila, Gan and Jenna teleport down to the surface to locate two jettisoned escape capsules. In the process, Jenna is abducted by the planet's Neanderthal -like natives and the others search for her. On theĀ Liberator, a mortally injured survivor, Ensor, is brought aboard, but he holds Cally at gunpoint and forces Blake to take him to the planet Aristo, where his father awaits urgent medical supplies. Blake learns that Ensor's father is the creator of a device called Orac , which is something the Federation wants very badly. Once Ensor dies from his injuries, Blake turns theĀ LiberatorĀ around and races back to rescue his friends. Back on Cephlon, Avon, Vila and Gan discover an ancient stasis capsule ship calledĀ DeliveranceĀ and a mysterious woman named Meegat, who tells Avon that it is his destiny to launch the ship into space. Meanwhile Servalan has re- instated Travis after his suspension following the Avalon fiasco, and reveals that she is responsible for the exploding ship carrying Ensor Jnr. Servalan and Travis set off to Aristo to get Orac.

BackĀ en routeĀ to Aristo, Avon, Vila, Gan and Jenna begin to suffer from the radiation exposure they received while on Cephlon, and require anti-rad serum to survive. Arriving at the planet, Blake and Cally go to the surface to find Professor Ensor and deliver the medical supplies in hopes he will have serum to trade. Unbeknownst to them, Servalan and Travis have also arrived to get to the professor, but the two must find his lab, which is hidden within a maze of underground passages inhabited by hostile creatures. Blake eventually procures the serum for his crew and gets his hands on the mysterious "Orac", an advanced computer that gives Blake a daunting prediction of the future ā€“ the destruction of theĀ Liberator.

Series 1 Quotes.
The Way Back
Blake:Ā There can be no justification for deliberate murder.
Judge:Ā The accused has been found guilty on all charges. His crimes have been accorded a category nine rating and as such are judged most grave. In sentencing you, the judgement machine has taken into account your past record; your service to the state and your loyalty to The Federation. None of these has mitigated in your favour. It is the sentence of this tribunal that you be taken from this place to an area of close confinement. From there you will be transported to the penal colony on the planet Cygnus Alpha where you will remain for the rest of your natural life.
Vila:Ā Easy! Take it easy! I hate personal violence, especially when I'm the person.
Vila:Ā You're on your way to the penal colony on Cygnus Alpha. Or you will be when the prison ship's refueled. Try to look on the bright side: It must have something; none of the guests have ever left early... In fact none of them have ever left at all.
Blake:Ā Why are you going there?
Vila:Ā They didn't give me a choice.Ā [Pause]Ā I steal things. compulsive, I'm afraid. I've had my head adjusted by some of the best in the business. But it just won't stay adjusted.
Blake:Ā A professional thief?
Vila:Ā More a vocation than a profession; other people's property just comes naturally to me.
Space Fall
Blake:Ā No, not until free men can think and speak. Not until power is back with the honest man.
Avon:Ā Have you ever met an honest man?
Avon:Ā Listen to me. Wealth is the only reality. And the only way to obtain wealth is to take it away from somebody else. Wake up, Blake! You may not be tranquilised any longer, but you're still dreaming.
Vila:Ā Nervous? I'm not nervous. Just... poised for action, that's all.
Blake: What went wrong?
Avon: I relied on other people.
(regarding a hypothetical betrayal by Avon)
Jenna: He fixes the log, the crew dump us, pocket the profit, and set him free.
Vila: That's immoral. The cold-hearted murdering -- let's kill him now before he can do it.
Blake:Ā If you had access to the computer, could you open the doors?
Avon:Ā Of course. Why?
Blake:Ā Just wondered how good you really were.
Avon:Ā Don't try to manipulate me, Blake.
Vila: No, I can't go in there, I've got a condition - a fear of enclosed spaces. There's a name for it...
Jenna: Cowardice?
Jenna: How do you feel?
Blake: Sick.
Avon: So you should. What a fiasco. You could take over the ship, you said, if I did my bit. Well, I did my bit, and what happened? Your troops bumble around looking for someone to surrender to, and when they've succeeded, you follow suit.
Cpt. Leyland:Ā I hope Mr Raiker's made it clear to you that you can refuse to do this.
Blake: Oh yes, he's also made it clear that summary execution is one of our options. We chose the other.

Cygnus Alpha
Avon asks Zen about the Teleport system:
Zen:Ā Wisdom must be gathered, it cannot be given.
Avon:Ā Don't philosophise at me, you electronic moron!
Blake:Ā [Picks up one of Liberator's side-arms]Ā Hand gun?
Avon:Ā It's a bit elaborate for a tooth pick.
Blake:Ā Depends how elaborate their teeth were.
Vila:Ā [The prisoners have been dumped on Cygnus Alpha]Ā This is nice, isn't it. What a miserable hole. If we all complained do you think they'd give us a refund?
Jenna: You wouldn't be trying to get rid of me, would you?
Avon: I have to get rid of Blake first. You're next on my list.
Jenna: That would have been very disarming, if I didn't know that you meant it.
Avon: (about Blake) He's a crusader. He'll look upon all this as just one more weapon to use against the Federation. And he can't win. You know he can't win. What do you want to be, rich or dead?
Time Squad
Blake: Seven of us can run this ship properly.
Vila: Six, surely.
Blake: You forgot Zen.
Avon: You're not counting that machine as a member of the crew.
Blake: Oh, what do you say to that, Zen?Zen: Please state course and speed.
Blake: Very diplomatic. Set a course for Centero, speed standard by two.
Zen: Confirmed.
Vila:Ā So much for Federation pursuit ships.
Gan:Ā At least we know we can outrun them.
Vila:Ā Outrun them? In this we can out stroll them!
Blake: Except that we're not going to hide. Very soon now the Federation ships will know exactly where we are. Or at least where we've been.
Vila: I don't follow you.
Avon: Oh, but you do. And that's the problem.
Vila:Ā [to Avon, after he has successfully retrieved the capsule that Blake and Jenna are in]Ā Very delicate. You know, with hands like that and a decent upbringing, you might've made a respectable pickpocket.
The Web
Avon saves Blake from an explosion:
Blake: Thank you... why?
Avon: Automatic reaction, I'm as surprised as you are.
Blake: I'm not surprised.
Avon: I'll tell you a fact of life, Blake! Change is inevitable!
Blake: Why else do we fight, Avon?
Ā
Ā
Seek-Locate-Destroy

Blake:Ā [Over communicator to Liberator]Ā I'm down and safe. I'm somewhere inside the main complex. Is Vila ready?
Jenna:Ā [Over communicator]Ā Hold on, just checking.Ā [To Vila]Ā Are you ready?
Vila: Tell him I've just worked out a completely new strategy. It's calledĀ Running away.
Jenna:Ā [Over communicator]Ā He's ready.
Vila: There isn't a lock I can't open... if I'm scared enough.
Blake: Are you scared enough for that one?Vila: What do you think?
Cally: They're taking too long.
Avon: That's the trouble with heroics, they seldom run to schedule.
Jenna:Ā They'll find it. There's not going to be a sign up there sayingĀ This way to the cipher room.
Gan:Ā They may need help.
Cally:Ā I think so too.
Avon:Ā They would have called in.
Jenna:Ā Avon's right.
Avon:Ā I usually am.
Vila:Ā Hello there. How are you? Excuse me wandering about your premises but I wonder if you can help me. I'm an escaped prisoner. I was a thief but recently I've become interested in sabotage, in a small way you understand, nothing too ambitious, I hate vulgarity, don't you? Anyway, I've come to blow something up. What do you think will be most suitable?
Blake:Ā You don't matter enough to kill, Travis.
Doctor: She's not yet well enough to submit to intensive questioning. She must have rest.
Travis: Yes, thank you very much indeed, Doctor, you are relieved of your responsibility for the prisoner. She is now the property ... the concern of the interrogation division.
Ā

MISSION TO DESTINY
Cally: My people have a saying: A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken
.Avon: Life expectancy must be fairly short among your people.
Blake:Ā You're quite sure about volunteering to stay?
Cally:Ā Well, we must help these people.
Avon:Ā Must we? Personally I don't care if their whole planet turns into a mushroom. I shall stay because I don't like an unsolved mystery.

DUEL

Vila: Have you thought of another plan?
Avon: Yes. I'm going to get some sleep.
Vila: How can you sleep with all this happening?
Avon: With all what happening? Blake is sitting up in a tree, Travis is sitting up in another tree. Unless they're planning to throw nuts at one another, I don't see much of a fight developing before it gets light
.Gan: You're never involved, are you Avon? You ever cared for anyone?
Vila: Except yourself?
Avon: I have never understood why it should be necessary to become irrational in order to prove that you care, or, indeed, why it should be necessary to prove it at all.Ā [Exits]
Vila: Was that an insult or did I miss something?
Cally: You missed something.

PROJECT AVALON

Blake: Avalon has started resistance movements in a dozen Federation planets.
Avon: Another idealist, poor but honest. I shall look forward to our meeting with eager anticipation.
Blake:Ā Does it support any intelligent life?
Avon:Ā Does The Liberator?Ā [pause]Ā There are creatures called "Subterrons". they live in caves, quite what that says for their intelligence I really wouldn't know.
VilaĀ (having been volunteered to go down): Me? Oh, no, wait a minute, it's cold out there and I'm very susceptible to low temperatures. I've got a weak chest!
Avon: The rest of you's not very impressive

BREAKDOWN

Avon: I'm finished. Staying with you requires a degree of stupidity of which I no longer feel capable.
Blake: No, you're just being modest.
Jenna: Hello.
Renor: Hello, hello, hello!
Vila: Ah. Jenna, this is Professor Kayn's assistant, his name is -
Renor: Renor. And I had a feeling this was going to be a good day.
Jenna: Yes, well, don't let your feelings run away with you
.Renor: Oh, a sense of humor, too. I love girls with a sense of humor.
Jenna: Yes, I can see where that would be an advantage. This way, please
.Renor: Do you believe in love at first sight, Jenna?
Jenna: Not yet.

BOUNTY

Vila: I'm entitled to my opinion.
Avon: It is your assumption that we are entitled to it as well that is irritating.
Vila: I don't want data, I want to know what's happening.
Zen: It will be necessary for you to make a personal investigation
.Vila: Oh, you're a big help. Personal investigation... Personal investigation... The next time Avon wants to make aĀ personalĀ investigation on how you work I shall make aĀ personalĀ point of handing him the instruments. Personally.
Ā
Deliverance
Vila:Ā [To Avon]Ā Including yourself, that's two people who think you're wonderful.
Vila: You're enjoying this, aren't you?
Avon: Probably.
Gan: Do you really believe we could launch that ship?
Avon: If the people who built that ship did their job properly, I don't see any reason why not. And it does seem that we have a reputation to live up to.
Vila: You certainly do, Lord Avon. I wonder why she picked on you.
Avon: Well now, you are hardly the stuff that gods are made of.
Vila: And you are, I suppose?
Avon: Apparently.
Avon: Meegat, I'm sorry you waited so long.
Meegat: Our waiting brought you.
Avon: That seems like a poor reward, somehow.
Cally:Ā Did she really think you were a god?
Avon:Ā For a while.
Blake:Ā How did it feel?
Avon:Ā Don't you know?
Blake:Ā Yes. I don't like the responsibility either.

ORAC

The Crew activate Orac for the first time. He sounds like Ensor]
Blake:Ā It's exactly as though Ensor were speaking.
Orac:Ā Surely it is obvious even to the meanest intelligence that during my development I would naturally become endowed with aspects of my creator's personality.
Avon:Ā The more endearing aspects by the sound of it.
Orac:Ā Possibly. However similarities between myself and Ensor are entirely superficial.Ā MyĀ mental capacity isĀ infinitelyĀ greater.
Jenna:Ā Modest, isn't he?
Orac:Ā Modesty would be dishonesty.
Vila:Ā What's wrong with being dishonest?
Orac:Ā Is that a question?
Vila:Ā Yes.
Orac:Ā The question is futile. Were I to say that I am incapable of dishonesty how would you know if I was being dishonest or not?
Blake:Ā A question for a question. Well, you're capable of evasion, anyway.
Vila:Ā I think I've heard enough, I don't like him. Orac, be a good junk heap; shut up.

EPISODE QUOTESĀ

Vila: Where did those ships come from? Who were they?
Blake: Yes, and why did they attack? Zen was confident they weren't Federation.
Vila: So why did they pick on me?
Avon: I doubt if it was personal, Vila.
Vila: It felt personal. It always feels personal when someone tries to kill me.

Blake: Avon - concentrate on Zen. Give priority to the detectors and the navigation systems. And then see if you can get us some scans.
Avon: Is that all? What shall I do with the other hand?
Blake: I'll let you know.

Vila: When you get Zen working, ask him to prescribe something for a headache, will you? I've got this shocking pain right behind the eyes.
Avon: Have you considered amputation?

CallyĀ (as she enters): What can I do?
Avon: Strip down the auto-navigator, remove the damaged components, and list them for replacement.
Cally: This is going to take time. It could have been worse.
Avon: ItĀ shouldĀ have been worse.
Cally: What do you mean?
Avon: Something Blake said. Those ships should have been able to knock us out completely. Why didn't they?
Cally: There could be many reasons.
Avon: I have considered all of them. Only one is satisfactory.
Cally: And which is that?
Avon: They didn'tĀ wantĀ to destroy us.
Cally: But it was a full-scale attack!
Avon: Was it? Their first attack knocked out our weaponry system. The second run knocked out virtually every instrument system. Right nowĀ LiberatorĀ is out of control. At least, out ofĀ ourĀ control.
Cally: You think all this was intentional, and we're not running on a random course?
Avon: Oh, I think we're going somewhere...quite particular.

Avon: How are you getting on?
Cally: I've finished fitting the auto-navigator. And now there is just this detector unit that is burnt out.
Avon: You'll find a replacement in the auto-repair cavity.
Cally:Ā (Replacing a component)Ā Good. That's all completed.
Avon:Ā (Tries to turn Zen on with no luck, Zen just burbles)Ā That's strange.Ā (Tries again)Ā Thought so. Zen is functioning, the computers are working, but not for us.
Jenna: Avon, there's something wrong in the teleport section - all the controls are activating.
Avon: Are you sure?
Jenna: The locators are setting bearings. Come and see.
Avon: No! No one is to go near that section until we have Zen under control.
Cally: Why?
Avon: I think I know what's happening now. The teleport section will be the most dangerous area on the ship. When it happens,Ā thatĀ is where it will start.
Jenna: WhenĀ whatĀ happens? What are you talking about?
Avon: If I'm right, this will show it.Ā (Connects wires and the component Cally replaced shorts out)
Cally: It's rejecting the replacement!
Avon: It's more fundamental than that.Ā WeĀ are the cause. It is rejectingĀ us.
Vila: If it ever comes to a showdown, my money's on Blake. Well, half of it. I'll put the other half on Avon.

Jenna: Perhaps we could chew our way out.
Alta 2:Ā (V.O., over P.A.)Ā Attention all guards. Security report: slave group number seven have attacked their escort and escaped. They are to be recaptured and eliminated. Repeat: recaptured and eliminated.
Avon:Ā (Suddenly stops pacing and spins toward window)Ā Jenna, come here.
Jenna:Ā (Joins him)Ā What is it?
Avon: You remember Orac's prediction?
Jenna: That's the least of our problems at the moment.
Avon: I checked the star pattern behindĀ Liberator.Ā What Orac predicted was happening halfway across the galaxy. I made a mental note of the configuration.
Jenna: And?
Avon: You're looking at it. This is the Twelfth Sector. Astral point seven eight one. Exactly where Orac predicted we would be destroyed.

Jenna:Ā What happened to your head?
Vila:Ā One of the guards didn't like me.

S2 E2. Shadow

The crew arrives atĀ Space CityĀ where Blake seeks contact with the criminal organisation Terra Nostra as possible resistance allies, but their leader Largo may have loyalty to the enemy. Meanwhile, an alien entity takes possession of Orac through his dimensional logic circuits and disrupts Cally's empathic powers, driving her to madness. Blake and his crew then rush to the desert planet Zondar to seek the heavily guarded source of the drug known as "Shadow", which is the basis of Terra Nostra's power and the only help for Cally.

EPISODE QUOTESĀ
Gan:Ā I can't find Orac. Even tried calling his name.
Avon:Ā Oh, I'm sorry I missed that. It's the kind of natural stupidity no amount of training could ever hope to match.

Blake:Ā We chose the wrong approach, that's all.
Gan:Ā Is that all? I thought maybe we'd chosen the wrong people to get involved with.
Avon:Ā "WeĀ chose the wrong approach"?
Blake:Ā IĀ chose the wrong approach. Does it matter?
Avon:Ā Yes, it does.
Blake:Ā All right, Avon. You were right and I was wrong. You said persuasion wouldn't work and it didn't. So now we use force.
Avon:Ā Force? Yes, of course. Law makers, law breakers, let us fight them all. Why not?

Jenna: It's enough to fry your eyeballs.
Avon: ā€¦daintily put.
Jenna: Must be the company I keep.

Avon: It could have been frying eyeballs you heard.
Jenna: ā€¦daintily put.

Avon: Ironic, isn't it? We were hoping to use the Terra Nostra to attack the Federation, only to discover that it is already being used to support it.
Vila: Where are all the good guys?
Blake: Could be looking at them.
Avon: What a very depressing thought.

S2 E3. Weapon

The Federation is in pursuit of a powerful weapon called the IMIPAK, (Induced Molecular Instability Projector and Key), a beam rifle that marks a living target with a point of unstable matter that the firer can use to kill the target later as they choose with a special hand-held remote. Its designer, a paranoid defector named Coser, is on the run; Servalan hires a "psycho-strategist" named Carnell to profile Coser and determine where he is hiding. Servalan also has beings called the Clone Masters create a living copy of Blake, with whom Coser is expected to meet in order to steal the weapon for her. Once in possession of it, she marks Blake, Avon, and Gan so that their only hope for survival is to outrun the IMIPAK's million-mile triggering signal.
First appearance for the " recast" Travis.

Episode QuotesĀ
Avon: Auron may be different, Cally, but on Earth it is considered ill-mannered to kill your friends while committing suicide.

Cally: Sooner or later, Blake is going to attack Federation Central Control on Earth itself.
Vila: Later.Ā MuchĀ later.
Avon: And alone, probably.
Jenna: I doubt that.
Gan: He wouldn't be alone ifĀ youĀ just left him, Avon.
Avon:Ā YouĀ would stay with him?
Gan: Yes.
AvonĀ (smirks):Ā VirtuallyĀ alone, then.

Avon: It is a triple-A security installation.
Vila: WeĀ haveĀ got into those before.
Avon: Usually with your screams of protest ringing in our ears. Are you telling me you're in favour of this idea?
Vila: No! Not exactly...I just don't think it's stupid. Perhaps...maybe I'm on your side, Cally.
Blake: It's not a question of sides, Vila.
AvonĀ (to Vila): No, it's a question of intelligence. So your opinion has very littleĀ relevance.

Jenna: Maybe IMIPAK is another Orac. If we captured it, perhaps we could breed from them.

Blake: Zen's best guess is that he'sā€¦ here. Offers?
Gan: Well, let's go and get him.
Avon: Gung ho?

Avon: We do not know what IMIPAK is.
Blake: Exactly. The least we've got to do is find out what it does.
Vila: Why have we? I can live without it.
Blake: It's just conceivable that you can't.
Avon: Unless of course you want your last words to be, "SoĀ that'sĀ IMIPAK."

S2 E4. Horizon

At the edge of the galaxy,Ā LiberatorĀ nearly collides with a Federation freighter. Blake is curious to know why the ship is so far from home and decides to follow it to a mysterious planet called Horizon. Teleporting down, Blake and Jenna discover a secret mining operation and are captured for interrogation. Gan and Vila go down to find them but are captured as well. All are forced to work in a dangerous mine while Blake tries to urge Ro, the planet's leader, that the Federation is manipulating him and enslaving his people. Meanwhile, Avon considers taking theĀ LiberatorĀ and leaving them all behind, but Cally won't hear of it and goes down to find the others. Avon asks Orac what his chances are of surviving against the Federation alone.

Episode QuotesĀ
Cally: You're not going to follow the freighter all the way to Horizon?
Blake: Why not? I'm curious.
Avon: Oh,Ā youĀ are curious. Well, I'm glad we have a worthwhile purpose.
Blake: Doesn't it interest you a little?
Avon: No! There's nothing out there - we are on the edge. Even Zen has nothing on it. That could mean anything - an experimental warzone -Ā anything.
Blake: That freighter's gone to Horizon forĀ someĀ good reason.
Avon: Which is more than you can say for us.

Vila: Why don't you go?
Avon:Ā YouĀ are expendable.
Vila: And you're not?
Avon: No, I am not. I am not expendable, I'm not stupid, and I'm not going.

Ro: I rule this planet.
Blake: Do you? I thought it was a Federation colony.
Ro: I dislike the word "colony."
Blake: Which word would you prefer?
Ro: I rule here, and you're my prisoners.
Blake: I dislike the word "prisoner."

Avon:Ā If I go alone, can I pilot the Liberator independently?
Orac:Ā With the help of the automatics, of course you can.
Avon:Ā I know that.
Orac:Ā Then why did you ask the question?
Avon:Ā I didn't. How long can I maintain myself?
Orac:Ā IsĀ thatĀ a question?
Avon:Ā Yes.
Orac:Ā We have concentrated food for one person for a thousand years.
Avon:Ā And our power is self-regenerating.
Orac:Ā Affirmative.
Avon:Ā Can you plot courses to keep out of the range of any known spaceship manned by the Federation?
Orac:Ā The battle and navigation computers can handle that perfectly adequately.
Avon:Ā I asked ifĀ youĀ could.
Orac:Ā Of course, should it be necessary.
Avon:Ā Failing that, we are powerful enough to resist all but an attack by three Federation pursuit ships at once.
Orac:Ā Is that a question?
Avon:Ā No. If we go now, we can sail the universe for as long as we like in reasonable safety, provided we keep out of everybody's way and we do not do anything rash.
Orac:Ā No data available to answer the question, If it was a question.
Avon:Ā I put it to you as a possibility. I request the odds.
Orac:Ā The odds would be three point five to one on survival.
Avon:Ā Therefore I do not need Blake, I do not need any of the others...
Orac:Ā Is that a question?
Avon:Ā I do not need anybody at all.
Orac:Ā Is that a question? I - I - I must ask you to be more specific!
Avon:Ā [snaps out of his thoughts] Shut up, Orac.

S2 E5. Pressure Point

Blake decides to strike a major blow to the Federation by going to Earth and destroying "Control", the main computer nerve centre for the entire government. Blake hopes the act will allow the resistance groups led by a former Federation officer, Kasabi, to launch an all-out attack against the Federation command. Blake's plan gets under way, but the Federation has discovered the plan and captures Kasabi, forcing her daughter Veron to liaise with Blake, but trapping him with most of his crew. They eventually escape and manage to break into Control, only to discover something unexpected and while fleeing the clutches of Travis suffer a reverse that leaves Blake questioning his entire crusade.

Episode QuotesĀ
Blake: It's time we really hurt the Federation. Oh, we've been hitting at the fingers, the arms. I want to hit at the heart. And the heart of the Federation is Earth.
Jenna: Where, exactly, or do you plan to take the whole planet?

(Avon has just agreed to join Blake on his suicidal mission)
Blake: Do you want to tell me why?
Avon: I like the challenge.
Blake: You don't want to tell me why.
Avon:Ā If we succeed, if we destroy control, the Federation will be at its weakest. It will be more vulnerable than it has been for centuries. The revolt in the outer worlds will grow. Resistance movements on Earth will launch an all-out attack to destroy The Federation, they will need unifying; they will need a leader. You will be the natural choice.
Blake:Ā Possibly.
Avon:Ā Don't be modest, Blake, you are the only one that they wouldĀ allĀ follow. You would have no choice; you would have to stay on Earth and organise the revolt.
Blake:Ā If there's no other way.
Avon:Ā There wouldn't be.
Blake:Ā That still doesn't explain why you're backing me.
Avon:Ā With you running the campaign on Earth, somebody has to take charge of all this.
Blake:Ā [Laughing]Ā You want The Liberator?
Avon:Ā Exactly. If we succeed, the destruction of control gives us both what we want.
Blake:Ā Could be you're planning just a little far ahead.
Avon:Ā Perhaps.

Blake:Ā [Via Communicator]Ā Liberator, we're at the rendezvous point, everything's all right.
Avon:Ā You have made contact with Kasabi?
Blake:Ā Not yet. Not directly.
Avon:Ā Then everything is not 'all right.'
Blake:Ā It will be, I'll get back to you.
Avon:Ā [To Vila]Ā Do you get the feeling there's something he's not telling us?
Jenna:Ā I dunno. I hate waiting like this.
Vila:Ā It could be worse; we could be down there with them.
Cally:Ā I'd prefer that to being here.
Vila:Ā You're welcome to take my place when the time comes.
Avon:Ā If it comes.
Cally:Ā What do you mean?
Avon:Ā Something's not right.
Vila:Ā He's failed to make contact with Kasabi.
Avon:Ā Exactly. But Kasabi's signal came from the rendezvous point. Blake has arrived there and failed to make contact.
Jenna:Ā That doesn't necessarily mean anything disastrous. Perhaps they're just being extra careful
Avon:Ā Let's hope so. Because I have a feeling that we are not being careful enough.

Vila: I don't want to go.
Avon: You surprise me.
Vila: I don't feel well. I'm going to be a big handicap.
Avon: I'm used to that.
Ā
Servalan:Ā Are you beginning to have doubts, Travis?
Travis:Ā No. It won't fail.
Servalan:Ā I hope not, there will be no second chances.
Travis:Ā I won't need them, it's running my way now. The luck has changed. It's my turn!
Servalan:Ā Capturing the girl is the only luck you've had so far.
Travis:Ā That single event has given me total control of the situation.

S2 E6. Trial

Servalan must answer to the mishandling of the Blake affair, and she tries to have Travis eliminated by setting him up on charges of mass murder before he can testify against her. Elsewhere, distraught over losing a crew member, Blake goes to an uninhabited planet to "think". Believing Blake has run out on them, Avon tries to persuade the others to abandon him once and for all. Down on the planet, Blake encounters a creature called Zil who warns that he will be "absorbed" by "the Host". In space, Zen detects unusual tectonic movement on the planet; Orac determines the entire planet is a living entity, which feeds on its surface lifeforms. After being rescued, Blake decides to send a clear message to the Federation that he has not given up, by launching a bold assault against Servalan's headquarters. The attack ironically allows Travisā€”who has been found guilty of the charges and sentenced to deathā€”a means of escape, and he forces Servalan to help him get away.

Episode QuotesĀ
Vila: I see. So you've decided to be led like the rest of us?
Avon: I shall continue to follow. It's not quite the same thing.
Vila:Ā I don't see the difference.
Avon:Ā Well, I didn't really think that you would.

Travis:Ā IĀ will make the opening declaration.
Thania: Look, don't be a fool. You really think you're going to impress them sympathetically?
Travis: I think the Supreme Commander wants me to go to my death quietly. This is as close to quietly as I am going to get.
Thania: Look, I'm trying to save your life, Travis--
Travis: You'd be better occupied trying to save yourĀ own, Thania. Majors can die quite anonymously. And your involvement in this fiasco makes your life expectancy onlyĀ slightlyĀ longer than my own.

Travis: A field officer, like myself, is frequently required to make fast, unconsidered decisions. You were all field officers, you know that's true. Time to think is a luxury battle seldom affords you. You react instinctively. Your actions, your decisions, all instinct, nothing more. But, an officer's instincts are the product of his training. The more thorough the training, the more predictable the instinct, the better the officer. And I am aĀ goodĀ officer. I have been in the service all my adult life. I'm totally dedicated to my duty and highly trained in how to perform it. On Serkasta I, I reacted as I was trained to react. I was an instrument of the service. So if I'm guilty of murder, ofĀ mass murder, then so areĀ all of you!

Servalan: It really is a pity he's got to die. He's so much better than anything I've got left.

Fleet Warden General Samor: Space Commander, we have considered your sentence at some length. Your contention that what happened on Serkasta was a direct result of your training concerned us greatly. We accept that you are trained to kill. As are we all. What weĀ cannotĀ accept is that this training leads inevitably to the murder of innocents. Your behavior was not that of a Federation officer, but rather that of a savage, unthinking, animal.

Jenna: Do you want to tell me why you've left most of the southern hemisphere off the search pattern?
Avon: I don't believe that Blake can think and swim at the same time. It's nothing but ocean down there.

Avon:Ā It's possible that one of your disciples... one of yourĀ threeĀ remaining disciples may come after you.
Blake:Ā Then you'll have to talk them out of it. They may even listen to you this time.
Avon:Ā Why not? After all, I don't get them killed.
[Pause]
Blake:Ā [Quietly, to Avon]Ā True.

Avon: One of these days they are going to leave you. They were almost ready to do so this time.
Blake: Yes, I thought they might be.
Avon: You handle them very skilfully.
Blake: Do I?
Avon: But one more death will do it.
Blake: Then you'd better be very careful. It would be ironic if it were yours.

Vila: They missed us! Avon's gadget works!
Blake: I never doubted it for a moment.Ā (Avon frowns.)Ā Is something wrong?
Avon: It just occurred to me that, as the description of a highly sophisticated technological achievement, "Avon's gadget works" seems to lack a certain style.

AvonĀ (To Blake): I would quite like to have met this Zil of yours. It's not often that one comes across a philosophical flea.
Vila: That's the stuff that legends are made of!
Avon: ( looking at Vila)ā€¦then again, perhaps they are not that uncommon.

S2 E7. Killer

On the planet Fosforon, Avon and Vila sneak into Q-Base, a Federation com-station, looking for a crystal needed to decrypt new Federation pulse-codes. In space, Zen detects a 700-year-old Earth vessel on approach to the station, and Cally senses something "malignant" aboard. Blake anonymously warns the station of the ship despite objections from Jenna that he is helping the enemy. On the planet, Avon blackmails Tynus, a former associate, to help Avon steal the crystal. Tynus arranges for a diversion that will allow Avon to slip past security, but it may be a ruse. Meanwhile, the base tows the derelict back to the planet whereupon Blake teleports down to warn them in person, but he is too late as the base unwittingly releases a swift-killing alien virus.

Vila: I hope you can trust him.
Avon: I told you, he's a friend of mine.
Vila: Yes, I always knew you had a friend. I used to say to people, "I bet Avon's got a friend...somewhere in the galaxy."
Avon: And you were right. That must be a novel experience for you.

Vila: When Avon holds out the hand of friendship, watch his other hand. That's the one with the hammer.

Avon:Ā Vila?
Vila:Ā What?
Avon:Ā You're a fool.
Vila:Ā Nerves getting to you?
Avon: There are a quarter of a million volts running through that converter. I make one false move, I'll be so crisped up what's left of me won't fit into a sandwich.
Vila: I'm a vegetarian. Thanks for the offer, though.

Vila:Ā You don't have a lot of time for Blake, do you?
Avon:Ā I could never stand heroes.
Vila:Ā A quarter of a million volts and you're putting your hand in?
Avon:Ā Ah, but that is self-interest. We need that crystal. Blake takes risks to help other people. Sometimes people he doesn't even know. One day that great big bleeding heart of his will get us all killed.
Vila:Ā Unless somebody ditches him first.

Tynus:Ā By the way, why don't our detectors pick up the Liberator?
Vila:Ā Anti-detection screen, one of Avon's gadgets. We're expecting it to break down any time.

S2 E8. Hostage

The Federation sends out twenty pursuit ships to hunt Blake down and destroy him, but theĀ LiberatorĀ withstands the assault and manages to get away. Blake then receives a message from his nemesis Travis, who has escaped the Federation and taken Blake's cousin Inga hostage on the planet Exbar. Travis makes the peculiar request to join up with Blake's crew since Servalan has made him a wanted criminal, but Blake believes it to be a ruse. He teleports down to the planet to rescue Inga, and meanwhile, unknown to Blake, Avon sends a message to Servalan with Travis' location. Concerned about Blake, Avon also teleports to the planet and later Vila joins him. The three are eventually rounded up by Travis, and his gang of "crimos" (criminal psychopaths), and Travis reveals his intention to take theĀ LiberatorĀ after he kills them. Inga and her father Ushton manage to trick Travis and release Blake and his team, who eventually leave Travis to be found by Servalan. When Servalan arrives, she agrees to spare Travis' life, and officially list him as dead, as long as he continues to hunt Blake for her.

Episode QuotesĀ

(Talking about Avon's detector shield.)
Blake: Looks like the Federation have developed a shield themselves.
Cally: Yes, well, they got very, very close before we saw them.
Avon: That is the most depressing aspect of the whole affair. I was rather hoping to sell them the idea.

Councilor Joban:Ā The council ask 'where is Blake's head?' And we have no answer.
Servalan:Ā You shall have it.
Councilor Joban:Ā The answer, or his head?
Servalan:Ā Both.

Servalan: Estimated time to Exbar?
Mutoid: Planetfall will be at twenty one fifty nine standard.
Servalan: Are we at full capacity?
Mutoid: We are calculating at time distort nine. That is our safety maximum.
Servalan: I thought this ship was capable of time distort ten?
Mutoid: That is the emergency maximum.
Servalan: This is emergency, time distort ten.
Mutoid: Yes, Supreme Commander. Time distort ten.
Servalan: Mutoids. Don't you ever question anything?
Mutoid: This is not our function. Our function is to obey without question. Computer reports message from Counsellor Joban.
Servalan: Ignore it.
Mutoid: It is from headquarters Supreme Commander.
Servalan: I said, ignore it.
Mutoid: It is directed to this ship.
Servalan: Is it directed to you?
Mutoid: No.
Servalan: To whom is it directed?
Mutoid: To you.
Servalan: And I said ignore it. Understood?
Mutoid: Understood.

Jenna: Where are you going?
Cally: I'm going to clear the neutron blasters for firing.
Jenna: Well, what are you going to fire at?
Cally: Anything that moves.

Vila: What have I done to deserve this?
Avon: How long a list would you like?

Servalan: There's no one as free as a dead man.

S2 E9. Countdown

Blake arrives at the planet Albion to capture Space Major Provine who is supposed to know the secret location of the moved Federation Control. Provine, however, has triggered an inescapable radiation bomb in response to a planetary revolt against Federation rule. Avon, with the help of a mercenary acquaintance of his, Del Grant, rush to disable the bomb, which is hidden in a bunker somewhere at one of the frigid poles. Grant, however, still holds a grudge against Avon for the death of his sister Anna; they must put the issue aside if they are to stop the bomb in time. Meanwhile, Blake learns Provine is still alive, but does not realise he is disguised as a resistance soldier and trying to make his way to an escape ship.

Avon: Understood.
BlakeĀ [speaking into wrist communicator]: Jenna, Cally, prepare thermal equipment. Stand by to teleport, Avon's coming up.Ā [stops an approaching Del Grant]Ā One more thing: if anything happens to Avon,Ā IĀ will come looking for you.

Avon: If there had ever been a time when I could have given my own life to save her, I would have done it. The only grain of consolation that I have ...is that Anna knew that.

S2 E10. Voice From The Past

Blake suffers nightmares of the memory conditioning the Federation performed on him five years before. On course to the resort world Del-10, Blake makes a sudden unexplained course change to PK-118, a mining asteroid. Avon and the rest of the crew restrain Blake, believing that someone is trying to manipulate his mind. Blake, however, tricks Vila into believing that the others are plotting against him. Once free, Blake teleports to PK-118 where he meets a resistance group led by former Arbiter General Ven Glynd ā€“ a man who originally convicted Blake at his trial, but claims he has defected. Glynd, along with two other revolutionaries, the frail Shivan (whose face is masked with bandages), and LeGrand (a governor whose ship they later rendezvous with), claim they have enough legal evidence to non-violently overthrow the Federation. They request transport to a political meeting on planet Atlay. Avon and the others, however, smell a trap when they realize a device Shivan carries may be controlling Blake's mind.

Episode QuotesĀ
Avon: Predictably barren.
Jenna: Wretched mining companies. No sense of aesthetics.
Avon: What d'you want them to do, landscape?
Jenna: Weeell, they could make an effort.

Servalan:Ā Where there's life, there's threat

Blake:Ā For once just try trusting me.Ā [Leaves]
Cally:Ā What is this priority of his?
Avon:Ā Exactly. He's used a number of ploys to get his own way, but "Just try trusting me"? That's weak even by his standards

Cally:Ā So what is wrong?
Orac:Ā You deduced it yourself earlier. Space Command has long tried to perfect a course interceptor attuned to the circuitry of navigational computers and rational coordinators like Zen. The scientists on Auron, however, had the wit to aim for the weaker point.
Avon:Ā The human brain.
Orac:Ā Correct.
Cally:Ā A telepathic order was beamed to Blake to force him reroute to that asteroid?
Orac:Ā As you, yourself, foresaw.
Avon:Ā So tell us something new.
Orac:Ā It is to Blake that you should look for the new.
Avon:Ā What's that supposed to mean? That they are still influencing him?
Orac:Ā Correct again.
Avon:Ā But how? A device of that kind would need an enormous power source.
Orac:Ā Agreed. But now that they...
Avon:Ā [Interrupting]Ā Now that they are close at hand, low power; of course.

Cally: What do we do?
Avon: Locate and destroy it.
Orac: And restore Blake to his senses.
Avon: The two don't necessarily follow.

Glynn:Ā Be careful not to tamper with it. At this close range it could cause serious damage to your computers.
Avon:Ā Is that correct Orac?
Orac:Ā No. Negative. Denied. Incapable of damage.

CallyĀ (to Blake): Are you all right?
Jenna: He's a hard man to rescue when he doesn't want to be rescued.
Avon: More to the point, are you yourself?
Blake: What happened? Why aren't we at Del 10? What's going on, Avon?
Avon: Why don't you just say thank you, nicely.
Blake: Well what are we all standing around for? Or has the Federation disappeared? Our problem is to find Star One, if you haven't forgotten.Ā (Walks off.)
Avon: I am sorry to have to inform youā€¦ that he is himself, all right.

S2 E11. Gambit
Blake's team arrives at Freedom City, one of the last places not under Federation control, to find a cyber-surgeon named Docholli, who, rumour has it, is one of the few people who may know the secret location ofĀ Star OneĀ ā€“ theĀ realĀ control centre of the Federation. As Blake, Jenna, and Cally look for the surgeon, who is hiding under the false name Kline, they discover that he is guarded by Travis, who has sought the doctor for maintenance on his cybernetic arm. Through the assistance of a devious casino owner named Krantor, Servalan lurks behind the scenes plotting to eliminate Docholli. She lays a trap for him by capturing Travis and secretly placing a bomb in his cyber arm. Meanwhile, Avon and Vila sneak a miniaturised Orac, (reduced to ā…›th size by demonstrating controlled molecular implosion), to cheat in Krantor's Big Wheel casino and win large amounts of money. Vila is later tricked by Krantor to play "to the death" in a game of speed chess against an undefeated player known as The Klute.

Avon:Ā Space City pales by comparison, they say.
Vila:Ā Y'know if it was a desert down there. So hot your eyeball frizzled, poisonous snakes under every rock.
Avon:Ā Blake would've sent us.
Vila:Ā You can bet on it.

Avon:Ā The Big Wheel is run by a computer, that fixes the odds at five percent in favour of the house. Right?
Vila:Ā Right.
Avon:Ā Right. OracĀ readsĀ computers.
Vila:Ā ...oh, that isĀ beautiful. Avon, there are times when IĀ almostĀ get to like you.
Avon:Ā Yes, well that makes it all worthwhile.

S2 E12. The Keeper

With clues left by Docholli, Blake heads to the planet Goth to find a "brain-print" of a man named Lurgen who knew the secret location ofĀ Star OneĀ and stored it inside an amulet worn by a royal leader called "The Keeper". While in transit, Avon suggests taking overĀ Star OneĀ rather than destroying it in order to gain control over the Federation, but Blake refuses ever to wield such power. After Blake, Jenna, and Vila teleport down to Goth, Zen detects a ship in orbit that Avon is certain belongs to Travis and destroys it. Travis, however, is already on the planet with Servalan to intercept the brain-print before Blake does. Travis offers to share control of the Federation with Servalan, but finds the brain-print himself and departs in Servalan's ship. Jenna and Vila attempt to amuse the king of the Goths while they try to identify the keeper. Eventually the location is found and the crew set course forĀ Star One.

Ā

Blake: He seems harmless.
Vila: He smells horrible.
Blake: Well, so would you if you'd been here for as long as he has.

S2 E13. Star One

With the location ofĀ Star OneĀ finally revealed, Blake is determined to finish his mission and destroy the control facility that keeps the Federation functioning. Again, Avon urges him to reconsider destroying it but Blake refuses. Meanwhile, Servalan deals with a series of catastrophes throughout several Federation worlds ā€“ the only theory is that someone is tampering withĀ Star One. Upon arriving atĀ Star One, Blake discovers that it has been taken over by Andromedan aliens in human guise who are posing as technicians and disrupting the systems. The aliens mistake Blake for Travis, and await his deactivation ofĀ Star One'sĀ defences; this will allow their 600-ship invasion force to move in and attack the Federation. When Travis arrives, he wounds Blake and deactivates the defences, Travis is unhinged and wants to help the Andromedans carry out the " final act" , to destroy mankind. Jenna then alerts the Federation of the invasion force, and after a shoot out Blake realises Star One cannot be destroyed as humanity will need all the resources it can get. All return toĀ LiberatorĀ where Avon takes charge as Blake is injured and is ready to defend Federation territory from the invaders until the Federation forces can arrive.

Episode QuotesĀ
Avon:Ā I have been doing some calculations. If this is Star One -
Blake:Ā IfĀ it is?
Avon:Ā First, catch your computer, but all right, it probably is, and that being the case, the choice of location is fascinating.
Blake:Ā I'm glad you're enjoying it.
Avon:Ā The nearest large galaxy to our own is Andromeda.
Blake:Ā So?
Avon:Ā So, this is the nearest point to Andromeda. If anyone could cross intergalactic space in less than a lifetime we are now precisely upon the route that they would take.
Blake:Ā What are you trying to say, Avon?
Avon:Ā I directed the detectors toward the Andromeda galaxy. There are thousands of satellite generators out there... beyond Star One.
Blake:Ā What?
Avon:Ā Even with the Federation's resources it must have taken them years.
Blake:Ā [examining a readout]Ā That must be the biggest antimatter minefield ever put together!
Vila:Ā Minefield, what minefield?
Avon:Ā Perhaps the intergalactic drive has been developed. The question is, by whom?
Blake:Ā A defence zone to keep mankind in, or something else out.

Jenna:Ā So it's a combined alarm system and minefield.
Orac:Ā Correct. If I may continue.
Vila:Ā He always makes me feel as if I should be taking notes.
Orac:Ā [annoyed]Ā IfĀ I may continue.

Vila:Ā Then they are expecting an invasion? A hoard of hairy aliens!
Orac:Ā There is no logical reason why aliens should be hairy.
Vila:Ā There's no logical reason why people should be hairy!
Ā
Durkim:Ā Servalan, by design or accident Star One is failing.
Servalan:Ā There has to be another explanation.
Durkim:Ā There isn't.
Servalan:Ā And if you want to keep your job you'll find it.
Durkim:Ā Why won't you face the facts?
Servalan:Ā Because I'm not convinced. And even if IĀ were,Ā there would be nothing I could do about it.
Durkim:Ā Well, surely under the circumstances you could get clearance to put a team in.
Servalan:Ā Star One is the most secure installation in the Federation.
Durkim:Ā IĀ knowĀ that.
Servalan:Ā Do you knowĀ whyĀ it's so thoroughly secure?
Durkim:Ā Well, presumably because knowledge of its location is severely restricted.
Servalan:Ā No! Knowledge of its location isĀ non-existent!Ā (Her tone is one of anger and desperation)Ā Durkim, no-one knows where Star OneĀ is!Ā No-one at all!

Blake:Ā I meant what I said on Goth, Avon. We are not going to use Star One toĀ ruleĀ the Federation, we are going toĀ destroyĀ it.
Avon:Ā I never doubted that. I never doubted your fanaticism. As far as I'm concerned you can destroy whatever you like. You can stir up a thousand revolutions. You can wade in blood up to your armpits. Oh, and you can lead the rabble to victory -- whateverĀ thatĀ may mean. Just so long as there's an end to it. When Star One is gone, it is finished, Blake. And I want it finished! I want it over and done with, I want to be free!
Cally:Ā But you are free now, Avon.
Avon:Ā [Bitterly, while glaring at Blake]Ā I want to be free ofĀ him!

Travis:Ā Put the gun down, Avon, it's too late to stop it now.
Avon:Ā Convince me.
Travis:Ā Be polite and I may let you live.
Avon:Ā Be informative and I may let you die. You'll want that after I've shot off an arm and a leg or two.
Travis:Ā I thought you were supposed to be the one with brains.
Avon:Ā Brains but no heart. Now talk or scream, Travis, the choice is yours.

[They see an Andromedan for the first time]
Technician:Ā What is it?
Avon:Ā Unfriendly. Which is fortunate, they'd be difficult to love.
Ā
Alien:Ā [believing he is talking to Travis]Ā Why have you betrayed your own kind? Why have you given us the means to eradicate your species?
Blake:Ā Eradicate humanity?
Alien:Ā Virtually.
Blake:Ā [re-assuming Travis' arrogant persona] Well. Maybe I just don't like crowds!

Travis:Ā [When Travis is about to secretly let a horde of Aliens through a galactic defense shield to wipe out all of humanity]Ā My one regret is that they'll never know who really killed them...

Blake:Ā [To Avon]Ā For what it is worth, I have always trusted you. Right from the very beginning.

Vila:Ā Avon, this is stupid!
Avon:Ā When did that ever stop us?Ā (camera shows each in turn, then:)Ā Fire!

S3 E1. Aftermath

Star OneĀ has been destroyed, the Federation is in shambles, and theĀ LiberatorĀ is severely damaged. The crew abandon ship using theĀ Liberator's lifeboats as Zen has cut life-support and initiated self-repairs. an unconscious Avon is put in a lifeboat with Orac by Villa and Cally and they land on the planet Sarran. There, he is quickly attacked by the barbarian-like natives, but is soon saved by a woman named Dayna Mellanby. The two also find the equally stranded Servalan, and Dayna takes them to meet her father Hal and sister Lauren (an adopted native). Servalan takes the opportunity to flirtatiously sway Avon into working to rebuild the Federation where they could rule together, but Avon rejects her proposal. Avon eventually makes contact with Zen and learns that everyone from the ship is missing. Servalan kills Hal and makes off with Orac who is the only one who can operate the teleporter onceĀ LiberatorĀ returns. Avon hunts her down and gets Orac back and leaves her stranded alone. Once back onĀ Liberator, Avon and Dayna meet a Federation Captain who claims the ship as his own.

Hal Mellanby:Ā You're not alone in losing your ship. The losses on both sides have been tremendous. I've been monitoring the status transmissions.
Kerr Avon:Ā Did we win?
Hal:Ā Sounds very confused, but there's not much doubt. The aliens were virtually wiped out.
Avon:Ā Well the price was high enough. But at least we got what we paid for.
Hal:Ā You almost didn't. It was a close run thing; what's left of the federation fleet, which isn't much, is scattered halfway across the galaxy. I'd say the Federation is in a lot of trouble.
Avon:Ā Yes, it's difficult to sustain a military dictatorship when you've lost most of the military.Ā [Hal laughs]Ā I only hope Blake survived long enough to know that he was winning.... Both wars.
Hal:Ā Blake? You were with Blake?
Avon:Ā Yes. Though it hardly seems to matter now, if it ever did.
Hal:Ā IfĀ it mattered? Blake and the Liberator. I've been hearing reports over the last couple of years. You were magnificent!
Avon:Ā Not from where I was sitting.

[Discussing Dayna]
Hal:Ā She has a genius with weaponry systems. And that's not just a father's pride talking.
Avon:Ā And yet, with all this to choose from, she still goes around with a bow and arrows.
Hal:Ā She takes absurd risks. I try to discourage her but I think she's trying to prove to herself that there's no weapon, ancient or modern, she cannot master.

Avon:Ā I seldom comment on other people's ethics.

Servalan:Ā I'm going to be honest with you.
Avon:Ā That should be mildly disconcerting.

Avon: It's a great pity you and I have always been on opposite sides, Servalan.

Servalan: You have one other quality I admire. Very much.
Avon: Yes?
Servalan: You areĀ infinitelyĀ corruptible. You'd sell out anybody, wouldn't you?
Avon: I don't know. I never really had an offer I felt was worthy of me.

Avon:Ā Imagination our only limit? I'd be dead in a week.
