How do they actually get these scores?

Did a computer watch the game and score it? A person? Is it linked to the GPS in their shirts? Does the ball have a GPS?

Ridiculous level of detail all the way to league 2 .... Seems incredible

Yes the ball does have a chip inside it, as does players shirts semi automated offside tech, to be introduced in Prem in January,  already used by UEFA, uses GPS to track ball. There's a FotMob app used by 50 million subscribers as well. The consequences of a multi  billion  pound global game. Also when someone comes up with a stat about say Mohammed Salah running 2.4 miles in a game , no one is in the stands with a notepad and pencil working it out  the players wear monitors. It is all AI controlled.

XG is easy enough as it catalogues shots against a database of shots taken from that position.

In terms of player ratings, yes there are people designated to tally every action in the game. It takes a long time to finish a game as you can imagine.

So it's people who do every game in terms of tallying the duals etc?

Yeah, this is why you sometimes get slightly different data between the major companies like Opta and whoever else, because some actions are interpreted differently/wrongly by the person jotting them down.

I read somewhere that Opta had three people on one match. One would track the actions of one team, the second the other team, and then there'd be an overseer to make sure it's all above board.

I'm sure the rise of AI has helped speed up this process in some way, but this was how it was done not long ago.
