Josh Cartwright hailed after star turn for Wigan Warriors

WIGAN WARRIORS head coach Matt Peet was full of praise for youngster Josh Cartwright after he was a late replacement for Jai Field.

Cartwright was named at fullback after it was revealed that Field was struggling with a lower back problem and was not risked against Warrington.

Peet admitted that Field might have played if the game against Warrington was later on in the weekend, but he had no hesitation in throwing the 20-year-old in at the deep end.

The youngster was outstanding for the Warriors as he scored a try in the first half and produced a try-saving tackle on Ewan Irwin late on in the game.

“Jai was a bit tight through his lower back,” admitted Peet. “Obviously it has been a short turnaround, if the game was late in the weekend he would have played, but we decided to back Josh.

“He’s been playing really well in the reserves for a while. We knew the work rate he would give us in the heat, he is a livewire. I thought he showed that tonight. He came up with some really big plays,

“It’s just a credit to him really. He is a very tough kid. He’s got some physical attributes that are serving him well, but he’s just very competitive.

“I’m very lucky when we are missing a few fullbacks and outside backs that we can call on players like Josh and Austin (Daniel) tonight.”

Talking about the game, Peet was proud of his youngsters and senior players as they came from behind to beat the Wolves 30-18.

“I’m very proud,” added Peet. “Proud of the commitment, toughness and confidence of the players.

“We were far from perfect, but in terms of attitude and commitment and confidence to play some rugby.”
