MIDLANDS HURRICANES will go into the season without the services of experienced secondrower Josh Jordan-Roberts after he called time on his career at 27 due to a long-standing knee injury.
The Birmingham club signed the former Leeds player a year ago, and after he made twelve appearances for them, took up their option of a one-year contract extension.
However discussions between Hurricanes and Jordan-Roberts, who has also played for York, Rochdale and Hunslet and was close to 150 career appearances, have led to the retirement decision, which coach Mark Dunning thinks is the right one.
Jordan-Roberts, the son of ex-forward Rob Roberts, whose clubs included Hull FC, Huddersfield and Leigh, said: “I feel very privileged to have played our wonderful game for such a long period of time.
“I have achieved what I set out to do when I first picked up a rugby ball at the age of four, which was to be able to play at the highest level I could for as long as I could.
“I’ve always had in the back of my mind that I wanted to retire on my own terms and that’s what I’ve been able to do.
“I feel very fortunate to have learnt from some of the best coaches in the game and shared the field with some of the most talented players.”
Dunning added: “Josh has made a real impact on the team and the club with his professional and competitive nature and spirit.
“This is bittersweet, bitter because he was a valuable member of the squad but sweet because he gets to do it on his terms having fulfilled his childhood dreams.
“When we initially spoke and he informed me of his intentions it was a surprise, but numerous chats since have made it clear he’s comfortable and content with his decision.”
The Hurricanes have agreed a one-year contract extension with 19-year-old backrow prospect Louis Beattie.
