“I’M just glad to get out of it.”
So said Matt Peet after Wigan Warriors claimed a nervy 24-10 victory away to Huddersfield Giants.
Two late tries from Zach Eckersley to complete his hat-trick added gloss to the scoreline but Wigan were locked in a fierce battle throughout against the division’s basement club.
While far from pretty, the win keeps Wigan in the hunt with Leeds Rhinos for the League Leaders’ Shield and now on an eight-match winning streak heading into next week’s derby clash with St Helens.
“I’m pleased to get away with the two points,” said coach Peet.
“Huddersfield were very competitive. It was a different type of game and I’m just glad to get out of it.
“We weren’t fluent with the ball, far from it, but we were pretty tenacious.
“We looked disjointed and I don’t think we managed moments of the game particularly well.
“Different weeks throw up different challenges and different types of games. Sometimes it’s less about the manner and more about just getting it done.
“But the two points stack up at the end of the year, even if it wasn’t that enjoyable.”
