Midlands Hurricanes tie down key centre

MIDLANDS HURRICANES have tied down another player for the long term by agreeing a contract extension to 2028 with centre Ryan Johnson.

The Birmingham club already had captain and prop Jon Luke Kirby, his fellow forward Mikey Wood and winger Matty Chrimes under terms until then.

Johnson, 25, made a permanent move to Midlands on a two-year deal ahead of last season, having previously played for them on loan or dual registration from Sheffield.

Originally a product of home-city club Hull FC, where his younger brother Ben, also a centre, is on the books, he has topped 50 Hurricanes appearances and established an effective right-side partnership with Chrimes.

Coach Mark Dunning, whose side have made a bright start to life in the merged second tier, said: “We’re delighted that Ryan has agreed to remain for another two years.

“He has worked really hard on himself and his game and it’s good to see that starting to pay off with his performances on the field.

“There is lots more to come from him in the years ahead. Knowing that will be in a Canes shirt is very exciting for both us and those who will be watching him from the stands.”

Johnson said: “I’m really enjoying my time at the club and it felt like a no-brainer to sign again.

“There’s something special building here – both on and off the field – and I’m excited to be part of what’s coming next.

“I feel like I’m playing my best rugby here and can’t wait to keep helping to build Rugby League up in this region.”

Ahead of this season, Midlands left the Alexander Stadium to set up a long-term base at Bournville Rugby Union Club’s Avery Fields ground.
