Paul Crarey hails character of Barrow Raiders comeback kings

BARROW RAIDERS boss Paul Crarey wasn’t giving too much away about exactly what was said at the break as he reflected on the most memorable comeback of his career.

The Cumbrians were trailing 28-0 at home to Dewsbury after 40 minutes of play, but they bounced back to score 39 unanswered second-half points and chalk up a fifth win on the spin and 13th in 16 league games overall this season ahead of Sunday’s visit to Salford.

The fightback surpassed that away to Sheffield in July 2022, when Barrow overturned a 32-12 deficit by crossing four times in the final 20 minutes to triumph 36-32.

Tee Ritson claimed the clinching score that time, but the prolific winger is currently out of action due to a long-term Achilles tendon injury.

Andrew Bulman, Ryan King, Ellis Robson, Shane Toal, Alex Bishop, Joe Bullock and Curtis Teare crossed against Dewsbury, while Brad Walker kicked five goals and a one-pointer.

“Sheffield was good, but this was better,” said long-serving Crarey. “To respond so well after looking down and out shows great character.

“We were nowhere near in the first half, and people were asking me what was said in the changing room at half-time, but I think I’ll keep that to myself, bottle it and sell it at some point in the future.

“What I will say is that we talked about what things we could change and what we could do better, and we simplified things.

“If our pack play to their strengths, they’re one of the best in the competition, and we were able to create some ruck speed, support the ball and get into spaces, and that gave us vital momentum.”

Barrow have taken Leigh forward Ryan Brown on loan for the rest of the season.
