Ryan Carr takes NRL role following Castleford Tigers exit

RYAN CARR has been appointed defence coach of NRL side Wests Tigers, three months after being dismissed as Castleford Tigers boss.

Carr had joined Castleford ahead of the 2026 season on a three-year deal, but struggled to inspire a turnaround in the club’s fortunes.

In fact, the Tigers won just eight of 23 games with Carr in charge, leaving Castleford searching for their seventh permanent coach in five years.

Reports suggested Carr had been stood down pending an internal investigation, although the Tigers said the ex-Featherstone Rovers boss was away for “personal reasons”.

Upon his dismissal by Castleford, Carr moved back home to Australia where he will now form part of Benji Marshall’s coaching staff at Wests, who came 15th out of 17 clubs in the NRL this year.

“Ryan brings a wealth of knowledge and was highly impressive throughout the interview process,” Marshall said.

“What appealed to me was his ability to connect to players and the way he thinks about his footy.

“He will be our defence coach and I’m excited about what he will bring to the team.”

Marshall also has former Hull FC head coach Brett Hodgson and ex-England international Chris Heighington as assistant coaches.
