Scott Taylor calls for rethink of Championship format

GOOLE VIKINGS coach Scott Taylor has called for a Championship rethink after criticising the current format.

He thinks it is unsustainable, particularly for clubs operating with a smaller budget.

Although Taylor, who will leave Goole to join the staff at Hull FC at the end of the season, is proud of his side’s efforts in the merged second tier this year, he believes the stark contrast between the top teams and the rest is too great.

“We shouldn’t have been in the Championship, but we end up merging and then playing teams with ten times our budget with some of them full-time,” explained Taylor following the 92-6 defeat at leaders London Broncos.

“We got Newcastle, we got Doncaster, we got Widnes and we got London. It’s just not sustainable for part-time lads when they play teams like that every other week.

“Jack Coventry is up at five o’clock in the morning for work, whereas the London boys will be on a recovery day in the swimming pool. It’s not fair on our lads.

“I know the (salary) cap is coming in next year, which should even the playing field out a bit.

“They (London) may be in Super League next year and get a bit of a taste of their own medicine.”
