York Knights boss Mark Applegarth comments on Jason Qareqare speculation

YORK KNIGHTS head coach Mark Applegarth has admitted he is a fan of Castleford Tigers star Jason Qareqare, after the winger continues to be linked with a move to the LNER Community Stadium.

Two months ago, League Express revealed that Castleford were facing an uphill battle in their attempts to keep Qareqare at The Jungle as York circled.

Tigers head coach Ryan Carr has repeatedly stated that he is keen to see the Fijian international pen a new deal with his contract running out at the end of the 2026 Super League campaign.

With the Knights in prime position, Applegarth kept his cards close to his chest about any potential deal, but he did admit he was a fan of the winger.

“I’m unable to shed any light on that (if Qareqare has signed) but if there is any news to share then I will make sure I share it on this press conference first,” Applegarth said.

“He has started the season very well at Castleford. I coached him when we were both in the youth ranks when I was coach of Yorkshire Under-18s during Covid.

“Our paths first crossed there so it’s great to see him fulfilling his potential because he’s a great player.

“I think Cas are getting a bit of a settled team and he’s showing what he can do. Ryan Carr and the team over there are doing a cracking job in developing them.

“If there is any news to share then the club will share it.”
